The Simple Truth

Nov 29, 2009 09:53

Here’s the simple truth: I am not a captive in a cave, nor a princess in a tower. (Anyone who’s seen my buzzcut knows I’m no Rapunzel.) I am a Person with a series of symptoms that make things that most folks do without assistance (& take for granted) a physical & emotional gauntlet. But I’m lucky. I have someone who’ll be an all but thankless go-between ‘twixt my tinnitus & the phone, someone who will drop everything to take dictation, or translate my scrawl. It is hard enough to put aside my pride and perfectionism to ask for the help. The idea that this isn’t enough, that it’s somehow isn’t really from me, makes me feel more like I’m inVALID, rather than simply an INvalid.

In my rush to reach out, I forgot my most treasured blessing: my wife, who goes above & beyond daily, & asks for nothing. Merci bien, mon ange. Understand this mes ammis; the only one that stands between me & thee is Captain Trips.
