Pam's not talking to Karen. Or Karen is not talking to her. She can no longer tell which of them is willfully ignoring what they did and which is going along with the idea that pretending it never happened solves the problem of what comes next. It almost feels like that night didn't occur. Like it's all some dream she can't shake.
(Maybe Jim's confession of love was a hallucination, too; in her mind, Jim's kiss is replayed with the same confused haze that Karen's are cloaked with.)
She considers asking Karen point-blank, but Pam's not a point-blank sort of girl. It's like she's used up all her courage on her broken engagement.
(One step at a time is taking too long, but it's all she can manage.)
So she stares at Karen, at the back of Jim's neck. She wants to scream at her, at him, and herself. She wants to know how she ended up in this place.
(She waits for someone else to make the next move.)
