my first drum lesson

I've wanted to learn how to play the drums since i was a kid. But it was never really a possibility. I mean, c'mon. me, playing the drums?? pshhh.

But for the past few years, I had been seriously thinking about it again. And last year, I even found an instructor that I thought would be really good. And a few weeks ago, I couldn't stop thinking about it. And then the whole Travis Barker accident happened, and it just kind of pushed me over the edge into actually making this whole drumming thing a reality.

So i contacted the instructor, and she said she was available. And i set up my first lesson for this past friday. It was soooo much fun.

We started at the drum pads. She sat at one and I set next to her behind another pad. And she showed me how to hold the sticks. And we just practiced hitting correctly. And then she pulled out some sheet music and I practiced playing some basic rhythms with both hands. And then we moved on to the drum sets. She sat at one set and I, the other. We were facing each other. And then she asked me to copy her actions. And then she pulled out some more music, and had me do some fairly basic rock beats, which were actually pretty challenging. Cuz i'm really clumsy and uncoordinated. So that kept me pretty busy for the rest of the hour. Now I know what a high-hat, snare drum, and a bass drum are. Those were the three I was practicing on. I didn't go crazy with all the other drums or cymbals or anything.

When I got home, I set up a makeshift drum set. With my penny jar on my desk as the high-hat, stool with neuro textbook sitting on top as my snare drum, and the floor and my foot as the bass drum. It actually works pretty well! :)

I have another lesson this friday. I'm going to practice as much as possible, and see how i sound on some real drums. I can't wait!

My advice: If you really want it, go after it! It's totally worth it.
