Clothing-
Emily- A light blue suit jacket and matching skirt. There is also a white high necked blouse and a pearl necklace and matching earrings. Her hair is in a chignon bun and is slightly streaked with greying hair. Her shoes are low heeled and black. Her makeup is very slight and can not mask the tired eyes.
Frank- Grey suit, white shirt and dark blue tie, shoes should be black or brown. The suit should be slightly ill fitting as he has lost a bit of weight. He should be wearing big glasses.
This is how I would want to stage Scene 6-
Two chairs on a dark stage separated by a one foot. Frank and Emily would be in each chair. There would be a large screen behind them and a little above them displaying at random pictures of the crime scene.
Frank and Emily sit in their chairs with their heads down and their hands on their knees with their feet slightly separated. The voice begins speaking and a spotlight is directed at the couple but they remain in their positions until it is time for them to speak and then they start to move into a regular sitting position with their heads forward.
The couple generally act very fidgety and nervous. Frank would be more bitter and louder in his voice and actions. Emily is more reserved but is high stung and keeps playing with the hem of her skirt. The only time her voice changes or is harsh is when the line says “ screamed Murderers! they were drunk yelling in the night Murderers! “ when she says murderers she should scream it out so it comes as a shock the rest of the words should be done in a monotone.
Anytime that the word innocent is used both Emily and Frank should say it together at the same time in a monotone voice. This should be accompanied by Frank slightly adjusting his glasses with one hand and Emily tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. This should be done to question the son’s innocence and how the parents feel about it.
The voice should sound very condescending to the couple and slightly mocking. And at the end of the scene we see the couple move back into their starting positions. When they have been in that position for 5 seconds the lights would go off.
