Mel's Movie Catch-Up From May to June

I finally gotten around to decreasing my dvd movie stack lol:

Superman: Unbound -- It's not my favorite animated movie, but it was still far more decent than the horrid Man of Steel. I haven't read the graphic novel it is based on in ages, but I frankly quite enjoyed it. The movie is based on Superman: Brainaic, and I thought they did Brainaic quite well. The interpretation is right up there with Superman: The Animated Series and Smallville. They were able to make him quite unique. I did enjoy their representation of Superman/Clark, and it was compelling to see his complicated duel life. I thought they did Supergirl/Kara's character quite well. I was kinda worried since I'm a Supergirl fan myself lol. Lois' character was so-so, but it was made up in her relationship with Clark, Kara, and how she reacts to Brainaic (). I really liked how they explained Kandor to the general audience, and how Brainaic trapped the Kryptonian city. This animated movie isn't too high on my Superman animated movies, but it was much better than Superman: Doomsday.

Watchmen - I finally gotten around to watching this movie, and I have to say was quite impressed with it. It's a heavily Rated-R comic book movie. I never read the graphic novel, but I did hear of it. I was quite impressed with the political, social, and philosophical issues that were present in the movie. It did make me wonder if Smallville used Watchmen as an inspiration for their season nine episode "Absolute Justice" (one of my personal favorite episode). If they did, then they only used a tiny bit of it. I was quite impressed with the graphics and gritty story. Now, with the Watchmen the context of dark, realistic, and gritty tone fits perfectly with the story they are presenting. It fits perfectly in the graphic novel's context. I really enjoyed all the characters, and it was great to see nearly everyone's background as well. I was really impressed with Zach Snyder's director work in the movie. So it is shocking to see what he did to Superman in Man of Steel, or at least a part of the reason to the horror of that insulting movie. I mean how did Snyder get from the awesomeness of Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen to the crap I saw this past weekend . Color me confused, but I really did enjoy his movie the Watchmen. It also has a killer soundtrack that combines music from the 1960's to 1980's.

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men -- This actually an independent film directed by actor John Krasinski. I came upon it because of the cast in the movie. It's about a grad student Sara, played by the talented and underrated actress Julianne Nicholson, who interviews men to see how the feminist movement has affected men. Over the course of the movie Sara begins to hear men's deepest thoughts about life, their family, and their tragic past. In sum what really makes them tick, and do what they do in their life. Throughout these interviews it flashes back to why Sara wanted to do this project, and it all comes back from being betrayed by her boyfriend's affair. It is a really simplistic movie, but I thought it carried a lot of weight. There are some exceptional scenes done by the talented cast. The acting is so natural and realistic. I was really impressed the most by Julianne Nicholson, Christopher Meloni, Frankie Faison, John Krasinski, and Dominic Cooper (you'll know him as Tony's father Howard Stark from Captain America: The First Avenger). Overall, it was a really good movie.

Epic --  It was so beautiful in theatres!! It was quite similar to the 1990's Ferngully, but I felt the human character was far more likeable as compared to Zach in Ferngully. The elves-ish people were done so awesomely with their fighting and sword moves. I just loved the tough-serious Ronin . The queen was so beautiful along with her vehicle. Plus I loved how they did the humming birds, bats, birds, and action sequences. Epic is realizing your not alone in the world (that you are part of something big), and to see the beauty in the world around us. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
