Melon Field 3 [Ammie]

Jul 08, 2008 23:47

On the far side of the island, quite a distance west from the town, there is a melon field. It lies between the edge of the forest and Memento Eden's largest lake, basking in the open sun. On occasion, water fowl waddle nearby, though the influx of visitors to the field seems to have scared them off. The soil nearby goes from hearty to moist and ( Read more... )

Lenalee walked to the melon field by the lake after work. Somehow, this seemed like 'safe' investigating, and for a while at least, that's what she was restricted to.

She knelt by rainbow melon 4, tapping the outside lightly with a finger. This was not the average watermelon.

The tapping sound certainly sounded like that of a ripe fruit, for all it was worth. The melon gave no reaction, but then, it would be more unusual if it did.

She just watched that melon for a bit. It was shimmering, which added to the strangeness of its colors. Then again, this place seemed to have a thing about oddly colored objects.

"Maybe this is paying us back for that cafeteria incident...though after that, I don't want to eat any strange food." Still, she felt the urge to break the melon open...and after a second or two, brought up one leg, spun around and brought the heel of her boot down right on the top of the melon.

A louder thunk came from the melon this time, but despite the force of the impact, the melon showed no signs of wear at all, save for some dust off of Lenalee's boot.

"Ah!" While the melon seemed unaffected, Lenalee's leg jarred painfully, and she took a few steps away, glaring at the fruit. What sort of melon wouldn't burst from an impact like that?

With that thought, she picked up the melon and threw it at the ground.

The melon landed there, tiny dust cloud and all, and looked unchanged.

Well that was bothersome. Frustrated now - fruit shouldn't be this stubborn - Lenalee picked up a rock and threw it at the melon. If that didn't work, she'd have to resort to sharp objects.

The rock bounced off harmlessly.

Of course it did.

Still glaring, Lenalee turned her back on the melon and disappeared for a bit. When she returned, she had a kitchen knife in one hand and a fork in the other.

The shining melon was waiting. Or not waiting. When you're a melon, there's not much of a difference.

She tried the fork first, poking at the melon a bit before giving it a good stab.

The fork bounced off the skin of the melon as if it were a rock. Not that the force was insufficient -- the fork looked more than a little bent.

Dropping the fork, Lenalee picked up the knife. Instead of a stab, she tried a slice, the way one might slice a loaf of bread or saw a piece of wood in half.

The knife glided over the melon's smooth peel harmlessly.

Well.

Lenalee set the knife down, too, got up, turned around, and sat down on the melon. This would require some thought.

Stupid stubborn fruit.

The melon was sat on, thick-skinned and... perhaps even hard-headed.
