Having fun in the snow

I'm supremely disappointed that I've not been able to take advantage of this 4-6" of snow to do some Calvin & Hobbes snow art. I even dug out the Wii sports accessories to do some scaled down selections from comic #6 on this page. Also had plans to do the ice cream scoop in the back one. But we got out there this morning and there's a solid ( Read more... )

At least you grew up on the plateau. There were a few of those out today, but mostly a lot of those little plastic saucers and the plastic toboggan-types.

well... near the plateau, but yeah, i had elevation working for me. you've got to have a good wet snow for a runner sled, too, so you only need a couple of initial runs to get ice-tracks made.

They had some pretty good ice going on today by the time we got up there. If they really loaded them down, they flew all the way to the cross street. Pretty awesome! You know, for the once every 10 years you get to use them. ;)

I was going to say that you should be more specific about tennessee. Growing up in east tennessee we got a decent amount of snowfall most years, and good sledding could be had.

Usually we used toboggans of a sort. I never had a runner sled. We also often used inner tubes. In a good year, we could get a tractor inner tube. In later years, after my father bought a surfboard, we used that to "surf" down the hillside.

The best year I can recall had 4 foot snow drifts. At the bottom of the hill we used for sledding, the level of the snow dropped about three or four feet suddenly. Awesome ride, but a serious pain to wade through that much snow to the top of the hill.

For reference, when I was growing up I always had snow boots and ski pants in the winter. Here in middle tennessee, I can't see buying that stuff unless we take up skiing... Oh, there are also some ski lodges up in the mountains.
