I don't care if it's Burt singing some sentimental song Mrs. Hummel used to love or the guys rocking out to the radio at the garage, but I neeeeds it!Summary: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
Word Count: 480
When Kurt was younger, the only way he’d go to sleep was if his mother would sing to him. However, it had to be “You are my Sunshine” or he would cry and throw a temper tantrum. This happened until Kurt turned five. Once that happened, his mother would tuck him in at night and asks if he wanted her to sing to him. His response was always, “I’m a big boy mommy. I can sleep on my own, but I still love you.”
She’d laugh and kiss him on the forehead. “Then go to sleep my little Kurt.”
“Big Kurt.” Kurt would always correct.
So, she’d amend what she said. “Good night big Kurt.”
“Night mommy!”

The night before his mother died, a seven-year-old Kurt crawled onto her hospital bed and wrapped his arms around her neck. “Mommy?”
His mother smiled weakly at him and hugged him back. “Yes baby?”
“Do you want me to sing you a bedtime song?”
“That would be nice.”
So, Kurt curled up in his mother’s arms and started singing the song she use to always sing to him.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know dear,
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
Burt watched his wife and son from the chair next to her bed. He held her hand as their son continued to sing until he feel asleep. It was then that Burt rose from the chair and kissed his wife. “You truly are my sunshine.”
She smiled. “And you mine.”
They were the last words they shared.

Kurt’s first day of high school was hell. As soon as he got there he was ambushed by the football team and thrown in the dumpster. Once he got out, he headed straight to the bathroom to clean up but was stopped by the hockey team and red slushies. After that was done, he had finally made it to the bathroom; all to have the basketball team push him against the wall as they called him names. He was left alone for the rest of the day.
When Burt came home from work he was greeted with the sound of his son crying. So, he did the only thing he could think of. He walked over to where his son was sitting by his late wife’s dresser, pulled him into a hug and sang.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know dear,
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
After Burt sang it twice Kurt joined him. They knew that it wouldn’t make everything better but at least it meant that no matter what happens, they were a family, and it was going to stay that way.
