Don't you think that if you sponsor a bill about the 10 Commandments, and think that they are important, you should know what all 10 of them are? I'm just sayin'.

I will agree that he should have known.

But let me play devil's advocate here.

Would Colbert react any differently to him if he did know all Ten Commandments, or would he show him up as a know-it-all who wants people to be like him.

See, I just think either way he would have lost on that.

the midrash is just an oral tradition, though... God says that all 500+ commandments are His and must be kept, through all cases where He speaks on the matter.

His emphasis wasn't on God, but rather on worldly things, betraying his misunderstanding of what "the 10 words" are really all about.

Agreed. But even if he did know them, he still would be put in an unfavorable light.
