V-Day

Regardless of my relationship status, Valentine's day always turns me into a bit of a cynic. I guess I remember how bad I felt about never getting anything in high school for Valentine's Day. You could send those different colored carnations to people for a dollar or something - one for love, one for friendship, and one for secret admirer. Once I think I got a carnation. Maybe.

I just hate how there has to be one special day to show someone you care about them. You should be doing that anyway. Not to downplay the fun of Valentine's Day, because hey - it's cool to get flowers or something when or do something out of the ordinary for something special. I just don't think it should be relegated to one day. Because that hightens everyone's expectations. Like, cooking dinner for someone. Normally, no big deal. But when it's for Valentine's Day, it somehow makes it oh-so-special.

Plus, it's so commercialized. "Show her/him you really care..." by purchasing this wicked expensive piece of jewelry she'll wear once or twice. Not that jewelry or cologne is bad...nor should they not be purchased as gifts. But when that becomes our standard of what true love is...

Valentine's Day was always much more fun in Elementary school. When you think that it's gross because some boy sent you a gushy card and he has cooties, and you could count on the cool cartoon cards. Like Spiderman Valentine's day cards. Or the carebaears.

This year, Ben's in Brazil. So...yeah. We'll be celebrating when he gets back...but it's just not the same. (Yes, for all my complaining about Valentine's Day up top, it still stinks that my boyfriend isn't around to celebrate with me). I got an e-card from my mother, which was nice because I'll always know I'll get something - no matter what the circumstance. And it was Veggie Tales, which made me very happy. :-) I unfortunately didn't get a chance to send cards out this year. I think Ben looked at me rather strangely when we are at Target on Saturday and I wanted to check out the cute kid Valentines to send to people. Hey - they're fun and cheesy, and they come 30 to a box. Who doesn't love getting those things???

On Friday, Beth and I are going to get dressed up to go pick up some take-out Chinese food and do Valentine's Day together. It should be a lot of fun.

But for now, I think I'm just going to curl up with a good book. I promise I'll be more intentional about updating this thing in the future.
