This week is our special Veteran's day issue of the paper (it comes out Thursday). Each year, we do a couple of stories about or pertaining to Veterans in the news section, then in the center spread pullout, we honor all the veterans serving in the current war that we've highlighed in the paper over the last few years. (We have a regular feature called "Hometown Heroes" that we do.) We also do other articles related to them, such as this year's Treats for the Troops, etc.
This year on the front page I highlighted a foundation started by someone originally from our town called the Injured Soldiers Foundation (
www.injuredsoldiers.org). It's a great organization that takes injured or disabled vets and their families, and takes them on outdoor excursions, free of charge. Possible events include hunting, fishing, a motorcycle rally, football game, a weekend at the beach, etc. The purpose is to give them a chance to get back to the hobbies they love, and spend quality time with family. If you have a chance, check out the link. They are a great organization, and if you're looking for something a little different to donate to, you might want to consider it.
