I volunteered to write up press releases for my daughter's soccer team and girl scout troop about 12 years ago and submitted them every so afternoon to our local weekly newspaper. After about a year, I came home one day to find a call on my answering machine from the publisher, telling me that she liked my writing, and was wondering if I'd consider freelancing for her? I did that for 10 years, gradually doing more and more stories, and I've now been editor of that paper for the last year.
