Had my first lesson in my 'how to teach science'-course and it was fun and interesting. Which bodes well because I've got more of that coming. One part of the lesson involved something called 'Concept cartoons', which is basically a cartoon that shows a scientific idea in an everyday situations and offers alternative viewpoints as an explanation. The first one that the teacher showed was this one:
Of course, the first thing that popped into my head when he put that one up was 'Oh, they did that on an episode of Mythbusers!'. XD Anyway, the whole point was to open up for a discussion of which answer was more likely - to which the answer is 'It depends'. Is it cold and sunny or is it warm and cloudy? That type of thing.
After that the teacher handed out a Concept Cartoon to each group. My group got the following one:
Since the text is in Swedish I'll just go ahead and translate it for you.
Blond: Doesn't the light from the headlights reach further at night?
Purple cap: They don't shine as strong when there's moonlight.
Weirdo hair: I think light travels just as far in the day as at night.
During group discussion:
Me: Well, a kid would assume the first because they can't see the light from the headlights at day. And technically the third character is right. Light travels just as far in the day as at night. Same speed and all, unless it's close to a black hole.
Group: o_O
Teacher: *happens to be passing by right then* O_O I've never gotten that as an answer during all the times I've done this. *starts laughing and walks on*
Group: o_o What?
Me: Black hole has gravity like whoa which makes the speed of light all wonky, 'kay?
Friend: And how do you know that?
Me: It's basic physics. Also, I watch a lot of sci-fi, okay?
