Wow, you really beat me. XD I think probably because you see more recent movies than me. A lot of new movies just don't appeal to me.

XP to the person who came up with 85.

Most of the new films are stupid. And I don't mean silly-stupid, I mean stupid-stupid. "This film was probably written by a braindead sex-addicted chimp" stupid.

You know what I'd like to see? I really cyberpunky cyberpunk film. Babylon AD was the closest there's been in a while, and even that nixed a lot of the cyberpunk element.

And whatever happened to the sarcastic hero full of gallows humor? I miss the snarky hero, and I want them brought back. :(

I agree, stupid-stupid movies, far too many of them. I go out to see a movie maybe twice a year I'm so disinterested in most new releases. I was pleasantly surprised by Iron Man, though. Did you see it?

When was the last time we had a snarky hero?

I've actually never read the Iron Man comics, but the film made me want to, which can only be a good thing.

I love that it showed a genius as something other than a bespectacled unwashed nerd with a speech impediment and serious social awkwardness hiding out in a basement lab somewhere. Yay for a three-dimensional smart guy!

Oh, I've read the comics and they're pretty good. He's portrayed as a very well-rounded character with lots of flaws, and it makes him so much more human that he has problems and weaknesses.

Yup, comics usually don't do the stereotype nerd. Just look at Batman, Beast and Mr Fantastic. Personally, I kind of prefere Marvel comics - but that's partly because I'm sometimes annoyed with the goodie-goodieness of Superman, and the sometimes far too angsty portrail of Batman. Marvel covers lots of aspects, and through X-men, they get bring out lots of issues with todays society. There's more to comics than just pictures of characters in spandex with a few talk/think-bubbles!

Oh, I agree. I'm a manga nerd, so I do know that comics can be and are more than campy craziness in Spandex.

It's just that where I grew up, the nearest store that sold comics that weren't Archie comics was three hours away, and Mom did not approve of her kids reading comic books of all things (she has some very odd ideas about comics and tabletopping and pretty much anything else geeky, as you may have gathered), so I just never had the opportunity to get into comics when I was younger, and now I don't have enough time or money. >>

But I think some of my friends may be into comics, so I can ask around if anyone is willing to loan me some good ones.

Yeah, I've known lots of people who don't understand comic books. For me, it was my brother who got me into reading comics, mostly because he read them. It's also how I got into drawing. I used to try to copy the drawings.

The problem with buying comics here is not that it's hard to find a store that sells them, but if it's not the price for the original comics(that is, the non-translated ones), it's the fact that the publishing company that prints the X-men comics is so irratic in publishing since the buyer-base is so small that publishing is cancelled every now and then. Also, there's not nearly as many titles released here, so what we did get would be a picked arc or timeline(like Ultimate, Astonishing or regular X-men comics). But back in the say, every couple of months they'd publish a big collection with a theme like Hulk, Avengers or Spawn. I've still got almost all of my brother's comics saved. :D

I did see Iron Man, and it was good. :)

I can't even remember the last time there was a good snarky hero. There have been a few where the hero made the occasional wisecrack, but the closest thing lately was Wanted and even then he was more self-depreciating than snarky.

Yeah, I agree about lots of the newer movies probably being written byt "braindead sex-addicted" chimps.

Oh, how I do miss the sarcastic hero full of gallows humor. Makes me want to watch movies like Die Hard and Constantine. I'd pick that dark, witty, dry or British humor over 'oh look, he said penis'-type of humor any time, every time. Unless it's clever odd humor, I love that too. :D

I love humor with a bit of a dark, morbid edge to it. I miss it. You don't see it outside of books much anymore, and even the books that do it tend to be a bit contrived with it - the exception being the Dresden Files. If they made a film that remained true to the characters, that would be awesome.

I keep hearing about the Dresden Files - might look up the show and perhaps the books.

Yeah, characters don't snark as well as they used to. And besides, now it's all 'we've got to stay 'politically correct' all the time, so no jokes that have a chance of even offending anyone - you know, other than sex jokes with the occasional joke on fecal matter'... And why is there no clever sexual entendres anymore, they've given up trying and just go 'Sex!'...

The books are so much better than the show that it defies the formation of a coherent analogy to describe how much better they are. The show is okay, but the books are awesome.

And neither of them made this list, nor any Batman or Iron Man or... yeah. So Mel, if you want to make your own movie list, go for it - we'll make our own movie meme :D
