Drabbles 21 - 30 31. Helpless
Wordcount: 104
Warnings: Spoiler for S01E08, "Denna"
Hanging above the pit, shackles crushing his wrists, he felt dread. Being told that Zedd was dead, killed by his own Wizard’s Fire, he felt sorrow. Tortured by the magic of the Agiel, masterly wielded by Denna, he felt pain. Noticing himself slipping away little by little, and unable to do anything about it, he felt despair. He couldn’t find the strength to fight. He had no hope of winning. But only when Denna threatened to do the same to Kahlan as she had done to him unless he killed his beloved to spare her that pain, did he feel utterly and completely helpless.
32. Fear
Wordcount: 107
Warnings: None
”I’m afraid,” Cara whimpered.
”Don’t be,” Grace whispered. ”It’s just a thunderstorm.”
That didn’t make Cara feel any better. The expression on her face told Grace as much.
“Come over here,” Grace said, lifting her blanket to let Cara slip under and snuggle closer to her. “I’ll protect you.”
Cara was still for a while, feeling safe in Grace’s arms. Then;
“Grace? Is it true that Wizards conjure thunderstorms when they’re angry?”
Grace laughed quietly. “I doubt it, Cara. They probably turn people into toads or something.” That made Cara laugh too. “Sleep now little sister, we’re safe.”
Cara closed her eyes and let sleep claim her.
33. Fire
Wordcount: 101
Warnings: Partly based on the books
“Father, can dragons fly?” Cara asked.
“Of course they can!” her father replied, ruffling her hair.
“And they can speak too, can’t they father?” Grace chimed in.
Their father nodded, smiling at his daughters. “Some of them can; the smart ones.”
“Speak?” Cara blinked. “Are you sure they can speak?” she asked, doubtful.
“Sure they can! And they can all breathe fire too!” Grace grinned.
Cara mulled it over for a bit, then her eyes lit up. “They’re magical creatures, aren’t they? Like night wisps... and gars.” She scrunched up her face.
“Exactly!” her father laughed, proud of his two girls.
34. Shadow
Wordcount: 106
Warnings: Mostly based on the books
The shadow followed him. He wouldn’t have worried if it was merely his own shadow, but clearly, it wasn’t. Zedd held his sleeping grandson closer, rocking the baby slightly as he eyed the transparent figure now floating only 20 paces away. He had seen these creatures before. Shadow People of the Underworld, summoned by Darken Rahl to touch and kill those who would oppose him. He shuddered and reached for the horn hanging at his waist. A clever invention of his own, he thought. He blew on it, and the shadow disintegrated. Good. He turned and continued his journey to the other side of the Boundary.
35. Haunted
Wordcount: 108
Warnings: Spoiler for S01E22, "Reckoning"
It wasn’t as if he believed in ghosts. It wasn’t as if he really believed that his palace was haunted. But ever since he had murdered his mother and had Egremont slay his father, Nicholas thought he had felt a presence, someone who disapproved of his actions. At first, he thought it might come from his unconfessed subjects, so he used his magic to confess them all. But the disdainful presence was still there, even more overwhelming than before. In the end, he had left the People’s Palace behind. As long as he remained there, he knew he would never get any peace from the late Queen Kahlan.
36. Spring
Wordcount: 109
Warnings: None
”What are you doing?” Cara implored, but Kahlan didn’t look up from the item of her attention.
”I’m looking at this flower,” she replied with an absent smile.
”Well, obviously, but why?” Cara arched an eyebrow.
”It’s pretty.”
Cara’s eyes moved from her to the flower and from the flower back to her.
”It’s… pretty…” Cara drawled then rolled her eyes.
”Mmm, it’s the first flower I’ve seen yet, this spring. It makes me happy. Reminds me of the magic of Rebirth that takes place every year.”
Cara eyed the Confessor. ”I’ll never understand you people.” She sighed and seated herself next to Kahlan, taking on the challenge regardless.
37. Summer
Wordcount: 110
Warnings: None
“Look at that!” Zedd pointed at a brightly colored butterfly fluttering past them in the summer-sun. “I never thought I’d see one of those again. As the story goes, they were originally conjured by wizards of old. They are extremely rare though. If you see one, you’re supposed to follow it and it will lead you to treasures beyond reckoning. Why, the last time I followed one it led me to a young lady -“
Richard coughed. “That’s okay, Zedd. Let’s follow it then.”
He, Kahlan and Zedd left the trail to follow the pretty butterfly. Only Cara remained behind.
“Guys?” she called after them, rolling her eyes. “Our quest?”
38. Autumn
Wordcount: 107
Warnings: None
Kahlan frowned. Richard, ever observant of his love’s moods, asked what was wrong. She looked around at all the death and decay, and explained that she’d never liked autumn much. Richard decided to change her mind. He reminded her of all the fruits, berries and nuts that only autumn offered. He pointed out the vivid colors nature was showing off. He told her of how autumn was part of preserving life, warning animals and plants that it was time to take cover so they could survive winter. When he finished, Kahlan viewed the forest around them differently. Maybe autumn possessed its own kind of magic after all.
39. Winter
Wordcount: 108
Warnings: None
Snowflakes. She shouldn’t be surprised, but she was. Winter had come to the Midlands, and for the first time since her childhood, Cara suspected it was okay to reveal the joy those flakes of snow brought her.
Once the layer on the ground was thick enough, she scooped up a handful and formed a ball. It hit Lord Rahl’s neck just right where he walked up front, leading them. When he turned, she pointed to Kahlan who protested indignantly as Richard shoved a handful of snow down the neck of her dress.
Oh yes, this winter would be wonderful, Cara thought, delighted by this powerful magic of nature.
40. Celebration
Wordcount: 109
Warnings: None
Cara shoved the box at Richard, urging him to take it.
“What’s this?” he asked, surprised.
“It’s for you,” Cara said. “A... birthday present,” she grimaced.
“I distinctly remember you said last year that Mord-Sith don’t celebrate birthdays,” Richard grinned.
“True,” Cara muttered. “But you’re not a Mord-Sith.”
Richard couldn’t argue with that. He opened the box to find a silver dagger.
“I had the Wizard spell it,” Cara stated. “It will never miss its target.”
“Thank you, Cara,” Richard said sincerely.
Cara smirked. “This means I’m excused from attending any celebrations Kahlan might be planning for this evening, right?”
“Not a chance!” Richard laughed, and the Mord-Sith sighed.
