I cannot understand the reasons for so many people's dislike of classical music and of opera. Sometimes I wonder if such a dislike or boredom is simply resulted from the fact that they are unable to delve into their own thoughts and emotions; they are too afraid to allow the music to carry them to those places of deeper, untouched mysteries to which all music ultimately leads. All like different sorts of music and all have the right to their opinions. It's just... sometimes I wonder how someone could listen to a work like Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven and not be moved. Classical music needs no explanation by another as it is self-explanatory. It is what you make of it; what is there not to like?
As I listen to Moonlight Sonata, one of my all-time favorite pieces, I am transported to an earlier world. I sit on a window seat and watch snow cut through the navy sky and land gracefully on the county below. I am waiting for someone that I fear will not return. I am waiting and the candle is burning low. When shall I sleep? Shall I ever? I wait in false melancholy for the candle to wane and wait for the visitor to arrive.
Classical music takes you on journeys. People just need to give it a chance and listen.
