At times like this Sam Guthrie can't help but to feel a little depressed. Watching his family and friends being happy should fill him with joy, but he almost always finds himself thinking dark thoughts after a few drinks.
Makenna Allerdyce all but throws herself into the seat next to him, somehow not spilling a drop of her drink over the lip of the glass. Her hair is a bright red tonight, her dress black and it throws the pallor of her translucent skin into sharp relief. Other than that, the girl looks the picture of health as if she hadn't been dead less than a week ago.
"The joys of being a psychic," she says in answer to his quizzical expression with a grin. "What brings you to hiding away in a corner at such a joyous time as this?" The girl questions, tucking her long legs under her and smoothing her dress over her bare knees. Sam's hesitant to talk to a 14 year old girl about the problems of death or the lack there of, but concedes that she had been dead a week ago after all and finds himself telling her anyway.
"Ah'm going to outlive them all," He says miserably, staring into the amber liquid of his whiskey. "Every time Ah see the people Ah love being happy Ah just find myself thinking about that. It scares me that Ah'm gonna be alone for a long time after they're gone."
"Hey,” Kenna pats him lightly on the arm after a long moment of silence in which they both watch their friends and family, "Just remember no matter how long you live for, I'm gonna outlive you. But at least we'll have each other until that time comes."
Sam laughs at this, "Ah guess it's a good thing we enjoy spending time with each other then, if we're going to be spending such a long time together.”
Kenna smiles sideways at him and takes a sip of her soda. "Very true."
She pats him gently on the leg. "The point is to enjoy the people you love as much as you can while they're here and always keep the feeling of being loved in your heart. Because it's gonna have to last you a long time." Kenna makes a face and shakes her head overdramatically, causing her hair to flip against her cheeks, "I should really stop with the pep talks, I'm just no good at them."
Sam smiles at her, "No, you just need to stop ending on a sad note, but the rest was fine," he pulls the girl into a one armed hug. "You're right and Ah'm thankful that you remind me of that.“ Makenna shifts and wraps him in a full bodied hug, squeezing him tightly in return she then pulls away and gets to her feet, holding her hand out to him with a bright grin.
"I have no-one to dance with, want in?"
The Kentuckian takes her in for the first real time since she'd miraculously returned from the dead (in much the same way Sam himself had) and can see something different he hadn't noticed before, being as happy to have her alive as he was. In the sharpness of her smile, the shadows under her eyes, that something behind her them that sends a slight shiver down his spine. As suddenly as it was there it was gone. Sam smiles cagily and takes her hand allowing her to pull him to his feet, taking her now empty glass and putting it down next to his and leads her to the dance floor.
"Ah'd love to."
