Eiji rolled over and watched Ryoma sleep. He watched the strong chest rise and fall with the same rhythm as the waves outside. He listened to the soft breathe inhaling and exhaling in the same rhythm. The dark hair that still seemed tinged green at times was on the white cotton pillowcase seemed to blow in the gentle breeze like ripples in the waves.
If Ryoma woke up and caught him staring like this he would be hit like a tidal wave with the pillow. The red head chuckled and continued…brain the threat of imminent pillow battery bravely. His finger traced the cheek, warm with sleep and dam with thin sheen of sweat. Not only from the humidity but from their night time activities.
Ten years and they were still together. Ten years and they were on vacation together again. Ten years…Eiji shook his head in wonder, he himself hadn’t thought they would last ten days let alone ten years. He had just known he had to try. Ryoma was dynamic and he drew people in. True he considered it a character flaw more times than most. But still he had drawn Eiji in. He had made the first move to kiss the senior and then he had been the first to announce to all and sundry they were dating. The moonlight glinted off the platinum band on his left ring finger.
Ryoma began to mutter in his sleep mixing things like the broken cassette player and have many kilohertz were needed to run something…whatever it was it wasn’t in English or Japanese - so Eiji just chuckled at his lover and let him sleep on. Contented he hadn’t woken up.
Eyeing his ring he thought of the day Ryoma had given it to him. He had been depressed that several of their old friends had gotten married. They couldn’t. very few places would see it as legal. Ryoma had come home one brilliantly clear Saturday afternoon and driven Eiji to the beach. The water and the sky had seemed perfectly blue and crisp. He had sat him on the sand and told him that they weren’t going to be married. They couldn’t. Eiji had looked like someone had just told him he had to survive only on Wada Calcium pills for the rest of his life. Or at least that is how Ryoma described it to him later. Then he had kissed Eiji and told him he could care less. He had slid the ring onto his finger while he was still kissing the older boy and told him that according to his family that marriage was about love, commitment and completing yourself with your spouse. They fulfilled those requirements so Eiji was his husband.
It ws that simple top the man asleep next to him. That simple to simply be in love and to be happy. That simple to accept that the world may never fully see their love in the good way and there would always be that heckler when Eiji kissed Ryoma good luck or in pure glee when he won. That whether the news was good or bad they would be there to get through it together.
Ten years and he still felt a jolt to his system when Ryoma kissed him. Or touched his hand by accident. There would be days when he and Ryoma would fight and yell and through things…okay so he threw things more often than Ryoma….it still counts.
Eiji Kikumaru listened to the waves and smiled as he watched Ryoma sleep next to him. He was as madly in love as he had been ten years ago. They had gone up and down and done it all together. The tournaments and the injuries. The Olympics and grand Slams. The illnesses and the healthy times. They had a better marriage than most people they had known. They were an oddity in the sports world…they had survived being in the spot light and time apart. They had done it all.
The red head let his eyes drift closed and sighed, “Ano sa, ‘Oma? I would do it all again…” He whispered softly thinking Ryoma was dead sleep. He kissed the younger man’s temple before falling deep into the world of dreams. Minutes later when he himself was asleep a golden eyes blinked open and a smirk teased a pair of lip that were still slightly swollen from eager kisses.
“Eiji…me too…” Ryoma drifted of to sleep wondering if his husband would ever figure out that he laid there and let his even breathing lull the other to sleep…then decided it would be at least another ten years…and he could live with that…
