[Chapter 1]

According to Yoochun, JaeJoong was staring into space.

According to JaeJoong, he was currently looking at a particularly annoying male ghost, making faces at him and trying to make him laugh. No luck there, though. JaeJoong only sighed.

“Hey, Yoochun. Stop staring at me like that thinking I won’t notice.”

Yoochun almost fell from his chair. He definitely didn’t expect the other guy to have been paying attention to him.

“But you know, you are funny to look at when you are daydreaming. Sometimes you frown and make strange expressions.” Yoochun grinned at his best friend. “What were you thinking about?”

“Nothing in particular. I was just wondering what I wrote about that last question on the exam. I can’t seem to remember it now.” Another lie. Lying to his friends, lying to his family… one could have said that he was a natural at it.

“But… didn’t you say-“

“Yeah, cut it. Just tell me what we are going to do now after the classes are over. You’d better have some good ideas, because I’m dying from boredom right now.” Well, at least this part was true.

“Let’s go to that arcade we were at last week. How does that sound?”

“Now that’s what I call a nice idea. I knew there was at least one reason for me to befriend you, Yoochun.” JaeJoong only laughed and dodged the textbook thrown his way. “Message Junsu about it, he’ll give us hell if we go there without him, you know that.”

“Yeah, whatever.” Murmured Yoochun and followed JaeJoong, who was already exiting the classroom.

Another creature followed them as well, only Yoochun was clueless about its presence.

JaeJoong had had a pretty normal childhood. That is, if you consider normal having more near-death experiences in the span of 8 years than most people have in their whole life. He was sure that because of him his parents had aged prematurely.

When he had been 2 years old, he had been rushed to a hospital because of his fever. His condition had been quite critical and he had given his parents a scare. Since he had been too young, he didn’t remember that event.

That would have been a totally normal occurrence if a year later he almost didn’t drown. In a fountain at that. Before he knew it, he was under the water observing the sunray’s play, and the dead leafs calmly floating on the water surface above him. JaeJoong had no idea why he didn’t attempt to stand up, but he knew for sure that the fountain hadn’t been deep enough for him to not be able to reach its bottom. Luckily, a man had noticed his fall and had taken him out of the water on time. He remembered that he had had quite a few nightmares about fountains and drowning in the nights to follow.

Some would say that this had been just bad luck, but all those years later JaeJoong knew better. Only the next winter he had been rushed to the hospital again after swallowing some of his mother’s sleeping pills. He had been fooled by the nice pink color and had taken them for candy.

After that, it seemed that the accidents stopped. It had been a year and a half later when he had been on vacation in Spain with his parents when he almost met death face to face once again. Running down a hill and ignoring his parents’ screams, he slammed himself in the wooden railings of the terrace overlooking the precipice. However, the wood had been too old and could not withstand the force of the collision. It had been a miracle that he didn’t fall in the river flowing five hundred metres below together with the wooden railings.

There had been a few more accidents including falling down the stairs and almost getting knocked down by a car while JaeJoong was chasing his soccer ball on the street.

After one last accident on his eighth birthday, the occurrences stopped completely. However, some time after he woke up in the hospital he found out that he had gotten himself a few new friends.

JaeJoong had his theories about that. He wasn’t sure whether he started to see the ghosts (as he came to classify them at a later point of time) because of all the times he almost faced death, or if he came so close to death, because of the ghosts. But one thing was for sure, the two things were connected. At least in his mind.

Junsu joined them in front of the arcade. But he wasn’t alone. There, standing right next to him was Boa. She waved at JaeJoong and he smiled back at her.

It hadn’t been long since he met her, but it felt like they had known each other all their lives. It was because they had something in common.

The first time JaeJoong had been in her presence, he had felt the strange atmosphere around her. He hadn’t been the only one to notice this though, because the girl had felt the same way about him. Although Boa couldn’t see and talk to spirits, she could sense them. She was a person JaeJoong could be entirely truthful to. He hadn’t felt this close to anybody before, even Yoochun.

“Hey, Junsu, let’s go for a soccer game. I still have to kick your ass for last time.”

“Like you could do that.” Junsu laughed. “You’ll be the one losing again, Yoochun.”

“No way. You were cheating back then.”

Soon JaeJoong was left behind, his two friends going ahead and bickering about their game. Boa was walking after them laughing at their antics. JaeJoong figured they wouldn’t need him for a while.

Boa threw him a last glace and mouthed “Would you be okay?” at which he nodded. He would be, he had been coping with this long before meeting her.

He found a secluded area, where no one would notice him talking to himself. He then turned around and looked expectantly at the ghost following him around for the day. He just hoped the ghost did want something from him and wasn’t just looking for company. Because bored ghosts meant trouble.

“Could you help me?” the man in front of JaeJoong asked.

“It depends. Do you know what you need to do for you to move on, or do I need to figure that out for you, too?”

“I…I know what I have to do before crossing over. But you’d have to lend me your body for this part.” The ghost smiled awkwardly.

JaeJoong hated doing that. He couldn’t describe it, but being possessed was like being forced into wearing someone’s dirty clothes. Only worse. And after that the smell from them clang to you for a while. Only it wasn’t a smell, but the emotions, thoughts and memories of the other person.

Every time he had to do that, he found himself acting strange for the few next days. Once he almost kissed a girl he didn’t even know because of the ghost’s feelings for her.

“Ok, go ahead. Just don’t take too much time.”

JaeJoong tried to relax as much as he could, although in the end it didn’t help much anyway. The moment the spirit merged with his body, a wave of dizziness overwhelmed him and his vision got blurry. He still could observe what was going on around, however he didn’t have even the slightest control of his body.

When the ghost started rummaging through JaeJoong’s bag, the boy started worrying. He had a bad feeling about all this.

“What the hell do you think you are doing?” JaeJoong hissed in his mind.

“I just need a paper and a pen. I have to write a letter.” The ghost answered.

“Oh…”

And he truly did only that. However JaeJoong was apprehensive, the gnawing feeling in the pit of his stomach still there. Lending your body to someone you don’t know at all wasn’t the safest thing out there, although most of the time the ghosts were friendly and harmless.

“Now I just need to deliver it” the ghost muttered.

When they were exiting the arcade they passed by the DDR machine where now a small crowd had gathered. The spirit seemed to be a rather curious creature, because he joined the crowd.

It turned out there was some guy playing the DDR and damn was he good… JaeJoong was in awe at the skills and moves of the other. He was moving like a professional dancer. The guy was also wearing JaeJoong’s school white and beige uniform. JaeJoong wondered if he had seen him around campus.

Apparently the ghost however wasn’t impressed by the other’s dancing, but by something entirely different.

“You’re checking Yunho out?” A long haired girl - correction - boy, asked him.

The ghost grinned at the other person, who also happened to be a student at JaeJoong’s school.

“Well, he’s got one fine piece of ass there.” Was the ghost’s reply.

JaeJoong’s jaw would have hung open if he was the one in control of his body. For he was completely scandalized.

“That’s why I hate lending my body… but no, JaeJoong, you have to be a fucking angel and help every fucking miserable soul out there. That’s why you get in messes like this. And a guy from your school…now everyone will think that Kim JaeJoong is interested in the same sex. Oh God, I don’t even want to imagine the rumors… No more helping anyone, you hear me? Next time a fucking ghost may even get you killed!”

The ghost just laughed at the boy’s tirade.

“And you! Shut up! The mess you’ve created is enough. I don’t need my classmates thinking that I’m crazy on top of being gay.” The boy proclaimed miserably.

“You mean you are not?” The ghost asked.

“What, being crazy? Yeah I must be for lending my body to a psycho like you.”

“No, I meant being gay.”

“What!? That’s it! Get out of my body now!”

“Haha… that’s too bad, you have the potential.” The ghost only laughed louder at this while exiting the building. “Plus, I was only stating the obvious… the guy really had a sexy ass.”

JaeJoong had to agree with that.

This was the first of JaeJoong’s encounters with the guy named Yunho in that particular arcade. And JaeJoong found himself hiding behind other machines and observing the other’s dancing in awe every time.

And Yunho…well, let’s just say that Yunho was totally oblivious of his surroundings at those times.
