I'm a history major and the more history I study the more I know i made the right choice. I love the subject. A lot of ppl think it's dry, but I think that's because they dont delve into it the way I do. I love seeing how prior events have shaped the world we live in today and I love discovering what people were like.
I'm taking an American history class this semester and I just love the topic! It's early history and we just got through the Revolutionary War and the creation of the Constitution. The whole thing is fascinating to me!
What an amazing group of people! The most brilliant lawyers and intelligent minds of the day all working together to create a just and democratic government in which the people have a stake in their own country. The people have a say, no matter what class they were born into. Sure tar and feathering is rather harsh and yeah the Sons of Liberty might seem like a gang, but I kinda find them amusing lol. And they were protesting against a governement they felt was repressing them and taking advantage of them. It's amazing to me how it all worked out.
When they started this country the government wanted Americans to be people of virtue and morality, and they prized education. There are a lot of people, in fact ive had teachers, that have a very pessimistic view of our country's history and founders. My American History teacher in high school thought George Washington was basically an idiot and as much as i liked her and respected her I have to disagree. In his youth, during the French and Indian War, he made some mistakes, but obviously he learned from them or we'd be speaking with a British accent right now. I think he was a daring and intelligent general, and a man of honor. A "modern day" Cinncinatus.
Cinnciatus was a Senator in the Roman Republic and during a great war he was made Dictator, just like Julius Cesaer did later, but unlike Cesaer Cincinatus gave power back to the Senate once the conflict was resloved and he was praised for it. For a man to willingly give up ultimate power is an incredible thing....it doesnt happen very often.
George Washington was such a man. After being the victorious and beloved general of the US he went back to his home and left governing up to Congress. And then after he became President of the United States he chose to only stay on for 2 terms even though he would have won the election for many more terms. In my personal opinion, I think he had much love for this country. And I'm not talking about pride necessarily, but true and deep affection for the country and its people and I know he understood his responsibility.
I'm proud of my country's roots and I have great respect for those that founded it. It wasnt perfect and I dont agree with everything that everyone of them ever said, but nothing is ever gonna be completely perfect.
I think that society should once again focus on being a people of virtue, morality, and education.
But what do I know, right? I'm just a silly college student.
