This last Saturday my community theatre had an acting/directing workshop with a visiting instructor from East Central University. I had a great time. It was for the most part an introductory type of class, acting in the morning and directing after lunch. He geared class toward the community theatre aspect of things, which is good, as it is certainly different sometimes than college theatre or help me professional theatre. He did have a few things to pass on that were new to me, but for the most part, things I already knew. And, truth be, if you can't learn something new, isn't is good to find out you are doing what you are supposed to be doing anyway?
There were eight of us in class for the morning. The three from the summer children's play did not stay for the afternoon class, but they certainly enjoyed the morning. Five adults for the directing class. A couple of those I'm fairly sure will never catch that directing bug, but at a least they now have a little understanding of why we do what we do.
It did rejuvinate me concerning play searching for my next directing piece. I'm looking for the next February show now. The teacher confirmed what I've been thinking for years...contemporary plays suck. Oh, sure, every once in a while you can find something, but jeez the trash you have to sift through to get there!
Sadly, Dr. Jones will be moving out of state to another college before the next sememster, so this is the only workshop he can do for us.
