Gossip Girl eps 1.15-1.18

The scene that made me think this might somehow actually be worth watching a while back (from ep 18):

So, I’m a horrible person for loving Georgina’s evilness, aren’t I? She’s just so happy an all-encompassing about it!

I kind of wish Jenny’s boyfriend using her to hide being gay hadn’t been so obvious, but I did like it giving Erik the chance to final step up and do something for himself, instead of just always being pushed and pulled by Lily and Serena. I loved how Blair was all “I have everything I need to destroy you but I can’t because it will actually hurt someone I care about!” and Erik said he could handle it. Then she sent everything to Gossip Girl as soon as he was through. I’m sure he didn’t mind her taking it as his blessing.

I’m still a bit disappointed at Blair and Jenny feuding over the fickle clique. I’d rather they be frenemies. Though Blair does seem to actually like Jenny.

Vanessa actually gave Nate some semblance of a personality! I mean, it was a mild there, but she actually elevated him to something vaguely resembling interesting! Though there’s still the threat of her being sucked into the black hole of boredom.

I kind of look forward to attempts to sell him off for his parents’ benefit actually paying off.

I’m actually kind of glad that Lily ended up marrying Bart. I think she should be with Rufus in the end (But highly disapprove of her sleeping with him the night before her wedding!) but it’s not what either needs now. And, you know, Bart (surprisingly) does seem to be a good guy and love her.

I liked Nate and Chuck automatically coming when Blair said she needed help, and then all their plotting to bring down Georgina. And is it just me, or did Nate imply in the last episode that his problem with Chuck had changed to Chuck not appreciating Blair? (Not that Nate has anything to stand on on that front.)

Though the best part of plotting against Georgina (even better than Blair throwing Chuck out of her bedroom after they fell asleep plotting…awww…) was Blair teaching Dan to plot. “Don’t worry, virgin. I’ll talk you through it.” Do we think she learned that line from Chuck? She so loves corrupting him.

But is it just me, or were the breakups a bit…random? Chuck bailing on Blair made sense (the idiot) but Serena/Dan and Vanessa/Nate seemed to be there to be angstfodder for next season. I’m sure Nate and Vanessa will angst over how they can’t be together and Dan and Serena will sleep their ways through the cast for 2-3 seasons only to end up together before the series ends.

You really can see them changing their minds about what to do with this show throughout the season. Overall, I think the eventual directions were the right ones, though, while I like the super-nice Serena (It's so hard to believe she was such a bad girl before! And, IMO, she makes a better noral compass than Dan does.) I kind of miss the tougher Serena from the pilot.

And I kind of like how this is actually a big fandom where most people are actually more interested (and rightly so) in the female characters than the guys. Except for Chuck.

I now feel the need to reclaim my "I totally don't watch primetime soaps!" cred.

my shame, tv: gossip girl
