First of all, may I just say that the new Brave trailer seemed to designed to make me NOT want to watch the movie, as most of the emphasis was on how Merida is Not Like Other Girls and is Super Special and doesn't get along with her mother because her mother wants her to be an icky proper lady and Doesn't Understand Her and her dad is just so much ( Read more... )

there were also people who weren't white wandering around Europe at the time, thanks in part to this thing called the Roman Empire.)

Ummmm, Roman Empire was long gone by any Middle Ages. Nitpicky, I know, but I can't help myself. Also, the idea of Middle Ages as this dark and horrible time is a Renaissance idea that stuck in popular consciousness, not the reality. About the only real dark age was around 9-10th century. Frex 13th century was pretty darn awesome as far as culture, prosperity etc went in large chunks of Europe. Sorry, the Middle Ages were my area in college :)

Re: people of color. I am of two minds. Chances of anyone non-white running around in Medieval Europe (outside of Spain in some time periods) = close to nil. Same as chances of an Englishman in Baghdad. People just didn't move around then - you stuck out as a sore thumb even if you were white but Jewish. HOWEVER. This is not really a tale of how Stephen defeated Matilda for the English crown or the Albigensian Crusade, i.e., anything reality-based. The story has talking critters, magic and dwarves, which are a lot less likely that POC in Medieval Europe, so realism is no excuse here and they certainly could have put POC if they were so inclined.

The Roman Empire had come and gone, yes, and left a lot of things behind it. Customs, architecture, religion, people... (This is also, I believe, roughly anachronistic 6th century in setting.)
