Snow White and the Huntsman

First of all, may I just say that the new Brave trailer seemed to designed to make me NOT want to watch the movie, as most of the emphasis was on how Merida is Not Like Other Girls and is Super Special and doesn't get along with her mother because her mother wants her to be an icky proper lady and Doesn't Understand Her and her dad is just so much ( Read more... )

movie: brave, movie: snow white and the huntsman, snow white

there were also people who weren't white wandering around Europe at the time, thanks in part to this thing called the Roman Empire.) Ummmm, Roman Empire was long gone by any Middle Ages. Nitpicky, I know, but I can't help myself. Also, the idea of Middle Ages as this dark and horrible time is a Renaissance idea that stuck in popular consciousness, not the reality. About the only real dark age was around 9-10th century. Frex 13th century was pretty darn awesome as far as culture, prosperity etc went in large chunks of Europe. Sorry, the Middle Ages were my area in college ( ... )

The Roman Empire had come and gone, yes, and left a lot of things behind it. Customs, architecture, religion, people... (This is also, I believe, roughly anachronistic 6th century in setting.)

I am not really a movie person generally, but I've gotten pretty stoked for this one from seeing my friends and other people gush over things like the femslash potential and the realistic practical armor on Snow. Definitely want to see it now; even the construction of the love triangle sounds like I'll adore it (full of initially highly dubious and screwed up and unhealthy feelings and dynamics that could nevertheless eventually become healthy and positive--and also left unresolved? I AM THERE).

Let's give "No one would ever think Kristen is hotter than Charlize" a rest already. Yes, Charlize is a more conventionally attractive hot blonde. Get over it.I hadn't even encountered this, or thought to make the complaint myself. I mean, in part that's because I forgot about the part of the fairy tale where it's sparked by that kind of jealousy, maybe because the posters focus on Kristen Stewart standing around in full armor looking resolute rather than posing in an impractical way designed to showcase her appearance. But also, like you ( ... )

Snow White spends most of the movie running around the forest with people trying to kill her and her dress getting in worse and worse shape, and then she spends a few minutes in a non-sexy white dress and switches to the armor, so I think they were DEFINITELY trying to emphasize that, yeah, she's really pretty, but no, it's not because she's amazingly hot.

With the triangle, it isn't really unhealthy AS IS, but would be if she were suddenly marrying one of them as is. William needs to go hang out a bit with other girls now that the "obsessive driving guilt" thing is over, Eric seriously needs AA and Snow needs some thereapy, and then she can hook up with whichever she wants in a couple years once they've all dealt with their issues.

I think both movies started out going after the types of dwarves they wanted. MM wanted to cast actual dwarves and SWATH wanted to popular character actors.

I read this: http://www.beyondhollywood.com/snow-white-and-the-huntsman-2012-movie-review/ and usually I can trust those fellows, but well, I think I can trust you'd notice if someting like bad overacting happened. *g*
And it's funny that the only thing this guy seems to like about the film is the one thing you didn't like aka the dwarves.

@ Brave
I hate those sterotypes so much and I hate the fact that it seems to be near impossible to change it. But the film still sounds promising and the Japanese trailer was awesome, so I'll keep that one in mind.

I didn't DISlike the dwarves, but they also didn't do a huge amount for me, but most seem to like them most. I suspect because they're cranky bandits played by popular character actors who get the funny lines (some of which I didn't find funny the way I was meant to ( ... )

I shouldn't say this at my age, but Kristen Stewart is pretty damn attractive, even standing next to Charlize Theron.

Though part of this is that I never got over seeing Charlize Theron in Monster. (I know, I know, she doesn't really look anything like that.)

I'm disappointed to hear the dwarves weren't played by dwarves. But I'm going to end up seeing this anyway, probably with my daughter (she's 18 and shouldn't be too freaked out by any of it, or so I hope.)

I think Kristen is very very pretty, but she's not what Hollywood (or at least fandom) currently thinks is gorgeous, whereas Charlize is basically the ideal of the beauty Hollywood likes.

I think I'm happy I haven't seen Monster, just because of what I've heard about it.

Not sure about the US version, but I just saw the Hungarian dub, and there the dwarves called the hunter by name.

Somehow I wouldn't call the XVIII. century the middle ages - as Snow White was collected by the Brothers Grimm at that time. It really disturbed me that this movie left everything out from that tale. One of it's biggest message was that a child should never open the door for strangers. Sure, a remake brings up the option to change the message - but have you found any in it? Cause I seriously haven't.

As for the romantic part. If something is called Snow White and the Huntsman, I expect that this Snow White character has some kind of connection built with the Huntsman. To then end with her becoming queen, while he stays hunter - more sober than usual, true but still that's quite the difference in rank. Also how he stands at the end of the room - I would say that's a hint that he is only an option if they run away together.

The story (in many forms) was around for centuries before the Grimm's wrote it down, so there's no reason it should be set in anything like the 18th century. As far as thematic messages, it was largely focusing on obsession with outer beauty vs the importance of inner beauty (which is in both what the Grimm's originally recorded and the very watered down, MUCH more message-heavy rewrites) and the influence of the male gaze on women (and it's rejection). The fact that every modern version makes her an adult when she enters the forest makes it hard to maintainthe "don't open the door to strangers" part.

The inner beauty did not came though for me at all. I caught some flashes about the queen having a background story, and so with a reason to her actions, but that was just a bit, and not the focus ( ... )
