Thanks for kind wishes on facebook & so on! Everyone is really great, I didn't announce or make party plans or anything but it wasn't like it was forgotten either . . . although Mark thought my birthday was the 10th! ("I thought it was always the 10th" "no, it's always the 12th")

So the other day when I was putting in the first wave of lobelia, I ranted to Erin for about a half hour about what I would do to the yard if I had money and six strong men to shovel dirt for me, but chief on my list was a rosebush with red blooms and a pretty smell. When Erin came home from finals she called me outside and lo and behold, it was sitting on a stepstool in the front yard. They had hidden it in the old dog house. It's amazing. Lewis also got me an orchid, also pretty. (The rest of the family chipped in for Photoshop CS3, fucking awesome!) Even the sun gave me a birthday present! It was nice all day, so I sat outside in my garden and read Rebecca from chapter nine to finish and got a horrible peeling sunburn. At least I have nice thick tanlines where the bra goes, so it's not all terrible and painful!

Also, dad is finishing up Northanger Abbey. He has also watched the movies of all the books except for Mansfield Park which might be a blessing because none of them are supposed to be any good. We got the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma and the horrible ridiculous Becoming Jane which he declared totally absurd but an alright movie. Nothing extremely wonderful (and yet he watched it once normally and once with the pop-up factoids at the bottom of the screen.) Part of what appeals to him about her is that just as she started making money, getting popular and not living on the edge of poverty like she had for years, she dies.

Today he turned to us and said, "I'm going to write one of those sequel books. The Revenge of Jane Austen, where she comes back to life, makes a heap of money and kills Charlotte Bronte."
