Stewart and Colbert to return to TV in January

On January 7, 2008, "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" will resume broadcasting, a day before presidential primary elections begin. They will be producing programs without writers, and both Stewart and Colbert (members of the Writer's Guild of America) will "ad-lib" the shows. There's also some question as to who will guest on each, as many actors and also politicians have refused to cross picket lines.

I'd guess contractual obligations (studio pressure) may be forcing these two to begin production again. Both have repeatedly stated they are supportive of the strike and would prefer not to create content until it has been successfully resolved. As usual, their humor enhances the point as they make it:

The two hosts said they would prefer not to return to work without their writers. "If we cannot, we would like to express our ambivalence, but without our writers we are unable to express something as nuanced as ambivalence." [from the NYT, December 21, 2007]
