Proffessionalism, or Lack There of...

So, I'm a Emeregency Medicine Intern for those of you who have lost track. It's alot of work, and other things have been going on, such as moving to a new apartment with my wonderfully amazing girlfriend. So things are good.

But, as you can infer from the topic of this post, not everything. I'm workign with oral surgeons this week. I was helping one of them on friday during the extraction of an incisor. the woman had lousy dentition, and had an abcess. My purpose is to learn how to do nerve blocks. I've done quite a few, and am getting pretty good, but when people have no molars, my landmars are still a bit hazy, so I asked my colleague if I was in the right place before giving the injection, and then did. For those of you who don't know, lidocaine burns when they inject you with it. not alot, but you know it's there. So after I inject, she decides I'm not good enough to treat her. My colleague then takes over, and makes a point to be rougher and cause her more pain just to make a point that I'm just as good. Then, he tells her that if she is still feeling pain to raise her left hand. Half way throuhg she does, he tells her to "Put your damn hand down." When I told him she probably needed more lido, he gave me a dirty look, reluctantly ordered more lidocaine, and told me not to do that again. All I was trying to do was keep someone from suffering needlessly. It's local anesthetic, it wasn't like I was giving the poor woman morphine or something. But then again, maybe I'm a suker when it comes to people complaining about pain...
