It's good that the Doctor let everyone know what to do to suppress an outbreak of plague, but as viruses have a way of spreading whether we like them to or not, I thought I should note that many of the symptoms related to the varied forms of plague can seem quite innocent at first ( Read more... )

[If Kanda had expected Jin to suddenly melt and shy away, he would be sorely disappointed. The reaction which occurred as the other man moved towards him with a threatening step was instant, and quite probably something Kanda would recognize; a defensive stance.]

[His own voice remained calm, yet firm, and he made no other move than the change in stance of before, as he watched Kanda, attempting to meet his eyes so the other knew his words were serious and truthful.]

Let us get one thing straight before you continue with your assumptions and become more aggressive. I am not handing medicine out based on any whims, but based upon facts.

The facts here are simple. You said your friend is sick, providing me with no other information than that, and that he had a cough. I provided you with the only answer I am able to give, that I would have to see him in order to know if his symptoms are too far along. I said this for one very simple, very logical reason... As soon as the plague has progressed past a certain point, no amount of antibiotic will help the patient, and so giving it to them would be useless, and a waste of the very few pills that we have been able to create.

If you are not pleased with this answer, then I am sorry, but I cannot change the way an illness acts, nor can I risk handing over some of the few resources we have to someone who may not even be helped by it.

Now, if you will please stand down and tell me what all you know, I will do my best to to aid you and your friend. But if you do not stand down, I will not take kindly to a threat to steal from me!

[Not escalating to anything physical, but certainly not backing down either. If it comes to a fight, Kanda will fight, but it's not where his priorities lie. He wants to get to Heine as quickly as possible.

He's clearly not swayed by these words though, perhaps having too long-standing an experience of doctors playing god, administering life and death according to their own whims and for their own objectives.]

I may not be a doctor, but I damn well know what you people do is about playing the odds on what might work and tossing aside the bodies when it doesn't.

How many cases of this disease have you treated? Not others like it--this one. In this world. And you want me to trust that you can know at a glance whether medicine will work without ever trying it?

NO doctor can do that. If you say you can then you're lying. Sitting on your damn stockpile of drugs playing god and trying to hedge for the surest bets.

You want to do that with other people's lives, be my fucking guest. But you're NOT doing it with my partner's.

I've told you what I know: it's been six hours, at most. I saw him today. If you call that "too late" for your drugs to work, then I call you a damn fraud who wants to pretend he can treat something he can't.

[Jin draws in a ragged sigh, a little bit frustrated at this boy before him. His eyes become steely, and he speaks very slowly. It is obvious he is trying to form his words with thought, and not attempting to in some way speak to Kanda as if he were a child.]

You people? If you are implying Doctors, then let me correct you once again. There are indeed Doctors who act as if they are gods, but I am not one of them. In fact, I have been more than just a Doctor in my life, and the last thing I wish to to at any point is to play around with someone else's life.

However, [And he accentuates that word] I can to some certainty take a look and know if medicine is useless. Why? Because the plague acts in a very particular fashion, and shows very particular symptoms. Once a certain symptom has appeared, then it is too late. This is not me lying, nor me hedging bets, or anything of such a matter, it is merely the truth as was proved by scientists who studied the disease, added to the fact that we do not have all the resources that could allow us to treat later stages of the disease!

[Jin then goes quiet, and his look is very specific, and would be translated into something along the lines of "Step back so I can do my damn job and think without you in my face."]

[Action] Sadly so. I'm sure they will have more opportunity to prod each other further soon though! kandescence March 19 2011, 12:32:00 UTC
[Kanda takes a few steps closer, making it clear that he is in no way intimidated or backed off by the man's words.]

If you think I would take you within a hundred meters of my partner you are a simpleton and a fool.

What have you done to earn my trust? To prove your competence?

You think I'll fold and submit to you, why? Because you happen to be here? Because I have no other options?

I will make other options.

And you can go to hell.

[And so saying, he turns and storms from the room, slamming the door behind him.

He knows that there are other doctors in the city, not least of which the one who'd spoken about synthesizing drugs a couple days before. Talking to this man further, he's decided, is not worth his time.]
