FIC REC POST.

I figured that as long as I was going to be lazy and not make any progress on my own fic, I might as well ovulate glee over the tremendous awesomness of others. Here is my top five list of must-read tenipuri fics (my comments under the cut). If you have been ridiculous until now and have not yet read them, dooo it. :D

1. peacock 's The Once & Future King (Oshitari/Atobe, R) has to be one of the greatest Hyoutei fics out there. What first drew my attention about this fic was the Hyoutei gen. She has just an absolutely clairvoyant sense of how high school boys act, and it is glowingly evident throughout the first couple of scenes.

Also, her style of writing is truly, truly a gem. There is zero frivolity; yet, she loses none of her vividness. Writing, when it really comes down to what is good and what is great, is about the feel. peacock has that feel. She knows how to keep her readers engaged and captivated; she keeps people guessing; she paints beautiful lands and beautiful people. Absolutely amazing, this fic is.

And oh dear lord the Pride and Prejudice references. *__* Wiiin.

2. An author that I find has, more or less, a similar style of writing as peacock is tokyostory. Her fic, Stop Me If You've Heard This One Bef - oh (Hyoutei gen, PG-13), tops the charts for Hyoutei gen fics. The thing that I fell head over heels in love with in her writing is that she has a unquestional talent for making her characters real, because let’s face it: with the way Konomi creates his characters, these boys are not 13 or 14. With the way tokyostory writes these boys, they are still boys, and they’re deathly competitive as testosterone-y boys should be, but they, at times, are also vulnerable as children who are still finding their way in the world should be.

On a less, erm, sophisticated note, however, I think I spat orange juice everywhere in the reading of this fic. She has the most amazing sense of humour ever, oh my god.

3. I have a hard time finding the right things to say about anjenue 's Once More, With Feeling (Oshitari/Atobe/Tezuka, NC-17), for anjenue is no longer with us. However, I do just want to say that she was such a talent, and this fic was the ultimate showcase of that. She knew what she was doing, she knew what she was writing, and she captured hearts with that. The introspection in her fics is often so sophisticated it is almost as if she can read directly into the minds of her characters, snatch the essence of their thoughts, and put it into gloriously beautiful words. Even in my line of work, I have never met anyone who has been able to express what their analysis as well as anjenue.

So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you ever get some time to sit down and enjoy some really spectacular fic, give this a try. I promise you won’t regret it.

4. If you are a crier, get tissues ready for tongari 's Last Train(Oshitari/Atobe, PG). While I like angst as much as the next girl, they are generally just pleasure reads for me, nothing I would rec. This one, though, was different. This angst wasn’t about the bitching - “Oh he doesn’t love me. I shall go fling myself off a tall building because I’m mentally instable like that.” - it was about the thoughts and emotions of longing for something - or someone - you can only admire from a distance. It’s hard to put this fic into other words, really, because so much of it was introspective and dreamlike, but I must put in my two cents and say that this is the most powerful and enticing manifestation of unrequited love I have ever read in fandom.

Oh, oh and her prose is so gorgeous it hurts. *__* a;wejifa

5. acantabloom 's Vanish, Appear (Sanada/Atobe, PG-13) is probably one of the best - if no the best - Sanada/Atobe I have ever read. The way she cuts her little drabble-scenes is very clever - and helpful to those with attention spans of maggots |D - and the way she crafts this story is insanely beautiful. The way the conflicting bitterness of abandonment and the almost subconscious existence of hope at first collide and then grow to complement each other had me choking in front of my computer and had my roommate wondering if I was dying or something.

So to recap: awesome characterization, beautiful words to go along with awesome characterization, remarkable supporting cast (Yukimura! Renji!) to go along with beautiful words, and just - completely melt-worthy.

There. My top five list is complete. ;D As I am a devout Hyoutei fangirl, these were obviously all Hyoutei fics. I'm hoping to go on to write a six through ten list at some point and rec the marvelous fics that are not all Hyoutei. But, erm, that may have to wait until after I finish my aw;eoifja;woeifj hyouteiexchange fic. =__= If that ever happens.

rec, hyoutei, pretty things
