SYTYCD: Top 8

Woot! Ellen is judging? I'm not sure how I get that, much as I love seeing her dance on her own show, but...I'm looking forward to it nonetheless!

Also I am frowning at knowing that Kherington is in the new Fame movie. Ewww. Now I'm WAY more looking forward to Step Up 3D, since that has ex-SYTYCD dancers I actually LIKE.

Also...Katie Holmes is on the show tomorrow night? I knew this was coming but...still weird.

And on to the show!

Hee. I love Ellen so much. I'm not sure exactly what she adds to the judging, but OTOH, if it meant less time for Mary screaming and Nigel drooling, I'd be all for it...(if, OTOH, it meant less actual judging from Mary, and JUST her screaming...) So, we'll see...

I am so terribly biased towards the girls this season. I like Brandon, but having re-watched the Emmy-nominated dances, I mostly am like "ooh, he is not Will. And Kupono sure was no Mark. Eesh." Whereas I am loving the girls (other than Kayla, and even her I admit she has some lovely moves

Oooh! Another Peanut number! YAYAYAYAY! (Did he just say "Huge banana extravaganza"?)

Group: ("Let it Rock" Kevin Rudolf) OMG, for a second I thought he put the boys in tutus. Meh. I definitely didn't love it as much as his piece last week. And some of that was the dancing--they weren't in synch some places they should've been. Some of it was the choreo. I liked some of it...hard to pick out different people, for me.

Evan and Janette: jazz with Sonja ("Move" CSS) I love Janette, but somehow Evan is still not connecting with power, for me. And that costume just does him no favors, looks-wise.

Kayla solo: ("The Moment I Said It" Imogen Heap) Hmm. That was a lot of dramatic gesticulating and body arching, and very little of her "Look at my long pointy legs!" I'm rather surprised and disappointed--her long legs are the one thing I like about her!

Brandon and Jeanine: waltz ("May It Be" Haley Westenra) OK, wtf? They are two of my favorites on this show, and....that would not get me to vote for them at all. Also, that song was not hardly any kind of waltz, fer cryin' out loud. Music for insomniacs indeed, as Nigel said. Eesh. They got screwed. For that matter, the costumers screwed Jeanine--not only is the yellow dress ugly, it makes her tits look awful. Get that girl a new bra and/or some tailoring.

Jason solo: ("Slowdance on the Inside" Taking Back Sunday) More actual dancing in this than often, and a better outfit than he's had in the past. I think he's getting better at the solo thing...a bit late, perhaps, but...

Ade and Melissa: chacha ("Yeah" Chino Espinoza) WTF is the shirt Ade is in??? And...oddly, much as I want to love this, there is just something I am not loving. I mean, the moves are pretty good. But...it's just not sexy enough? They're a little too stiff? I don't know. Melissa looks gorgeous, but...there's just something. Oh, maybe it's her lip pursing? Maybe his awful outfit. Hell if I know. No, he tried to sizzle there, and he just couldn't.

Jeanette solo: ("Seduces Me" Celine Dion) REALLY? Celine Dion? I liked it better when she was salsa-ing it about the stage, also, but...Celine??

Jason and Kayla: broadway with Tyce ("Mr. Monotony" from Jerome Robbins Broadway) This is *very* Broadway. And they look good doing it, and the costumes are good.

Ade solo: (Hater, various artists) He's all about the eclectic music, eh? But he dances very well. (I'd kinda like to see him in something that doesn't look like they grabbed him off the street and said "dude! c'mere and dance for us!", but...)

Janette and Evan: rhumba ("Heartless" Kris Allen) Ooh, he stumbled right away. Bad. Also, was that the slowest rhumba ever? Evan visibly fucked up a few times. But he did manage to get a vaguely badass look on his face, sorta. Um. Jeanette, of course, was great.

Melissa solo ("Heads Will Roll") Yeah Yeah Yeahs ...OK, quit trying to look badass, and do some dancing, girl!

Brandon and Jeanine: pop jazz with Laurieann Gibson ("Battlefield" Jordin Sparks) I can't tell if I didn't like the choreo or the dancing. They definitely weren't in synch at times, but...hmm. I do think Jeanine is super hot, though. Yum. Hmm. But the judges all LOVE it.

Evan solo ("Old Devil Moon" Jamie Cullum") Evan's strength, here, is that he's really good at choreographing a solo. More than the rest of them. He does a dance that works with the music, that appeals to the audience, that works in the time frame, that is a DANCE, as opposed to a random "i'm throwing together a collection of moves OMG I must do somethign before my time is up AAAAH!"

Jeanine solo ("Let the Drummer Kick" Citizen Cope) Oh, I like this song. She was cute, and kinda funky. It was decent.

Melissa and Ade: contemporary with Tyce ("This Woman's Work" Maxwell) Wow, shockingly for a Tasty Oreo piece, I really liked that. And the dancing. Excellent. Randomly, I am impressed that Mia's makeup didn't run more.

Brandon solo ("Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" Robert Randolph and the Family Band) OK, he's shirtless, trying to appeal to the audience no doubt. Why are his pockets sticking out? I feel like he was so much more impressive in his initial tryout.

Jason and Kayla: hiphop with Shane Sparks! Zombies?!?! ("They're Everywhere" Izza Kizza) Ooh, I hate to say this, but I think Kayla was lots better than him, in that. I'm not sure if he was taking the "zombie" theme too hardcore, or what, but he was more mushy than she was for most of it. And I sure liked that more than a NappyTab routine.
