She is the only thing that grounds him.

When Jack feels the most like running away--or worse, when he just gives himself over to the fear and adrenaline that always pushes him toward doing something stupid--Sun has this way of touching him that makes him stop. Sitting at the computer, he feels her hands, steady and strong, on his shoulders, then her forehead rests against his neck. Or if he's standing, her arms slide around his waist, palms flat against his stomach, instantly tracing patterns as she lays her cheek against his shoulder and he stills. He doesn't just want to be calm when she touches him like that, soundlessly; he really is calm.

But more often Jack feels like he can't move, that the things weighing on his shoulders aren't metaphorical but physical pressures and hurts that make him prone to simply giving up, letting the weariness take over. He drops onto the blanket they sleep on, overloaded with dread, and he wants nothing more than to curl up inside himself. It's crazy, he knows, because his own mind is no more safe than the world outside, but he does it anyway, shutting himself up like a hermit, sealing himself into a cycle of worry.

Sun's capable of touching him then, too, in ways that draw him out at his own slow, obstinate pace, to get him to talk through it; but sometimes all the talking in the world won't help. Then, she has to be stubborn, demand the attention she deserves. She hates the way it leaves him initially so guilty (as if he needs more guilt), but sometimes that's the only thing he understands, the only thing that will bring him outside himself again. Once she gets him started, though, once she kisses him and asks for what she wants, he forgets to be guilty or worried and just gives, laying himself and his own problems aside for a while to give her what she needs. His hands and his mouth work out all the tension in her, make her feel wanted and loved.

And she gives, too, taking him in her mouth or climbing on top of him, letting him watch her when she comes, right before she makes him follow. It's a different kind of cycle, a give and take that leaves them both breathless. Jack would say it feels like flying or freefalling. Sun would agree: falling, only with the sure knowledge of a net below them.

She's never sure who's the net, or maybe both of them are. She's just sure this is the only thing that grounds them both.

sun, jack
