I still didn’t find time and courage to write about “Ancillary Justice” trilogy, that became a most revolutionary and impressive piece of literature I’ve read recently. In the middle of the second part, I was already dreading - the third is close, and the end is inevitable…
If I would write, I would, surprisingly, start with the following frivolous quote:
Steve Rogers: Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?
Tony Stark: Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
Reading Ann Lecky means constantly evaluating possibilities: strip gender as insignificant, eliminate any preference attached to it, let people freely choose their intimate contacts and partners solely based on their individual occasional choice with no “birth sex” involvement - and what will be left of us? The answer is so simple: everything!
The strive to power, the dreams of greatness, need to be cared for, to be loyal, to have rules to follow, to ask and get the answers - they are universal, not pertaining to gender or even species.
And with current trend to genetic revolution, maybe soon people indeed have a uterine replicator and ability to conceive a child in any combination of parents’ sex. It doesn’t seem impossible on this stage of scientific development. As all good sci-fi is, Ann Lecky’s books are not about future, they are about us
