Catnip Breath (Part one of two)
The rain poured down on Kei as he ran hurriedly home.
Just as he was about to turn the curb, he heard a sound. It sound like a miaow. Huh? he thought. Slowly, he backed up, and looked into the small alley to his right. He quinted hard and tried to look for the source of the sound. And then, he found it. Kei spotted a drenched, black cat crouched near some trashcans and cardboard boxes. "Hey, there..." he smiled, moving towards it, completely forgetting about the rain and his drenched body.
"Are you hungry?" he looked into its dark eyes.
They seemed to be answering although he wasn't quite sure. He cocked his head to one side and said, "Wanna come home with me?"
The cat looked at him, and then walked up to him and walked through his legs, pushing its head against him.
"Okay then!" Kei scooped the cat into his arms and held it close to his chest. Mum won't mind, will she? he thought, pondering. The cat looked up at him and miaowed again. "Huh?" Kei looked up at the dark night sky, and blinked as raindrops splashed mercilessly onto his face. "Oh, yeah..."
In a few minutes, Kei was walking into his lounge room, drenched and smelling like wet cat. His mother walked in from the kitchen but stopped dead as she looked at him.
"Why are you soaking wet?!" she cried out.
"Umm..." Kei bit his lip.
His mother squinted and walked cautiously towards him. "Is that... a wild animal you're holding?"
"Not really," was his reply.
"Get it out." She said in a tone that meant he had to do it.
"But--"
"Get. It. Out." she said in the defiant tone again.
Kei's shoulders slumped and he looked down at the cat. "Sorry..." he muttered. He walked slowly to the door, and just as he was about to open it up, he heard someone say, "Are you going to listen to that old hag?"
He jumped up in surprise and looked around. His mother had already gone back to the kitchen, and his father was still at work. Kei shook his head dumbfoundedly and continued to open the door. "Hey, did you hear me?" the voice said.
Kei stepped out into the rain. "Hello?" he called out. "Is anybody there?"
"It's me, you idiot."
Kei looked down at the black cat that was still in his arms. "Did you see who said that, Nyan-nyan?" he asked, even though he knew it wasn't going to answer.
"No, but I know who said it." the cat said nonchalantly.
