Disclaimer: If you are not a fantasy sports dork like myself, this will not have any relevance to you, and therefore I suggest you discontinue reading, unless you want to see how big of a sports dweeb I'm really capable of being. Now, with that said...
OK...so i'm a little bit peeved at the sport that is baseball. And no, it's not the greed, or the juice, or the egomania that has corrupted America's pastime this time for me.
It's my fantasy team.
Look at these players on my roster this season...these guys have been in my active lineup for at least the past 3 months and while some have hit major, uncharacteristic slumps, in general, they are producing the way they should be post All-Star break.
C - Mike Piazza (NYM)
1B -Todd Helton (Col)
2B - Jeff Kent (LAD)
3B - Aramis Ramirez (CHC)
SS - Nomar Garciaparra (CHC)
OF - Hideki Matsui (NYY)
OF - Juan Pierre (FLA)
OF - Magglio Ordonez (DET)
U - Paul Konerko (CHW)
B - Shawn Green (ARI)
And the pitchers..
SP - Mark Prior (CHC)
SP - Jason Schimdt (SF)
P - Javier Vazquez (ARI)
P - Brandon Webb (ARI)
P - Kevin Millwood (CLE)
RP - Huston Street (OAK)
RP - Mariano Rivera (NYY)
RP - Ryan Dempster (CHC)
In addition to these jocks, the Mt. Pleasant Rockers (my team) have also had some major early season contributions and quality numbers to my stats by players including Vladimir Guerrero, Carlos Delgado, Jose Guillen, Brian Roberts, Brian Giles, Richie Sexson, Tim Hudson, and Roy Oswalt.
Now ask me what place I'm at in the standings of this 10 team league? 2nd? 3rd? Nope.
10th place. A.K.A. Last, the bottom feeder, the loser, the can't-catch-a-break complainer.
And what hurts more, is that I've been in last place for most of the season. People that haven't even checked their team since May are doing better than me, who checks it almost daily.
It just doesn't make sense to me. Given, baseball is probably the most inconsistent sport in terms of individual players and their abilities. You have an all-star one year, and a Mendoza hitter the next, without any signs of injury, foul play, or failing a pee-cup test.
But come on....LAST PLACE? WITH THIS TEAM? ALL OF THEM ARE ALL-STARS!! Either I've just lost my ability to put together a good squad or Yahoo! is pulling a fast one on me and my numbers. I demand a recount.
Well, I guess I'm gonna have to take out the trash again now that the NHL is back. At least I've got credentials there. Won the league 2 years in a row, and the last season before the lockout, had a close race and finished 2nd. Ooh ooh, and I won the football league 2 years ago as well!
Yeah, my pride is hurt.. and I'm just trying to compensate for my baseball ineptitude. It's quite humbling I guess.....
Does it surprise any of you that I'm also a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan?
