The only event that I have consistently gone to for longer the the MDRF is Balticon. My first year in attendance was Balticon 7 and I've only missed about 5 years since.
Since about 1990 this con is as much about work as it is about fun for me. It is where almost all of my RPG material has premiered and where most of my games have been playtested.
I have run marathon game sessions, I've worked my own table in the dealers hall, I've even been part of a forum or two. As part of the work side I have done CD tosses and donated items to the RIF auction. I have set out flyers by the thousands and given away products and CD's with the rules for over 150 games on them. I did a tally 2 years ago and realized that I have given away over 12,000 cds in the 10 years that I have been taking them to conventions and it all started at Balticon.
It was the first convention I ever attended and is probably a good part of why I am who I am today. It gave me a love for games, scifi and fantasy. It opened my world to new things every year and gave me a voracious appetite to read. I even remember being in HuntValley on Apple II computers playing Zork for the first time.
It has grown and I have met many friends at the con. I've seen many people from many of my other activities. It amazes me how many folks I know from MDRF that also attend Balticon. I have seen movies and met bands and dj's, I even had the opertunity to be in a locally produced movie at one time because of attendance at the con.
So if your going to be in HuntValley for Balticon this holiday weekend please look for me and say hi. I'll probably be playing games and chatting with friends old and new. I not only demo my games but also those from Looney Labs, Cheapass, and Steve Jackson.
So comon out and join me for some anime or maybe a movie, theres filking and food, or hell how about we do the wargames thing...
You know...
