Darth Vader and Jay-Z collide, finally

Mar 30, 2010 10:28

I'm not the biggest fan of hip-hop parodies, mostly because they're too geeky. And this sis even though rap has nerds in it - Kanye West, Mos Def, Biz Markie, ?uestlove, RZA.

But from the moment Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew named himself Luke Skywalker, "Star Wars" and hip-hop have made a sweet pairing.

The latest in this phenomenon? The stellar "Empire State of Mind," where Jay-Z and Darth Vader finally collide. Even the lyrics are decent; not quite the level of Jay-Z's flow, but it's damn close.

And why shouldn't Vader and Hova come together? Before the prequels melted Vader down into a whiny jerk and feeble Frankenstein monster, Darth Vader was the baddest, meanest space gangsta the galaxy had ever seen. In fact, his all-black costume and James Earl Jones voice made him blacker than Lando Calrissian.

Kevin Smith knew this, as shown in the funniest part of "Chasing Amy."

But as we all know, rap is not just by black folks anymore, so we take it all the way back to 2002's "Star Wars Gangsta Rap," which had the audacity to turn Vader, Luke and Yoda into MCs, each with his own style. The flow ain't great, but they're not trying to be Jay-Z, and it's very funny. The video got a spiffy upgrade in 2004, and in 2009 they dropped a sequel.

Dark Side jedi ain't nuttin' ta fuck wit'! Ya heard?
