Pittsburgh NAC

I spent pretty much all of yesterday and today downtown watching fencing -- a USFA North American Cup event was in Pittsburgh. It was a lot of fun. Ben, Tommi, and two freshmen who I didn't know (Max and Noah) fenced in the Division 1 men's epee, and Kira and another freshman (Jasjit) fenced in the div 1 women's epee. Ben finished second, which was awesome. He fenced well the entire tournament, although in the last bout he was clearly getting a bit tired. Still, second is a great result, considering that this was a div 1 NAC and there were about 230 people in the men's epee. Kira did pretty well in her pools, and then upset the ninth seed in the first round of DEs. Unfortunately she lost her next bout and her first repachage bout, but she still did very well. It was a fun couple of days -- it's always fun to see Princeton people, especially Ben and Kira. I can't wait to go back for the alumni meet and reunions.

There was also a holiday party at Jake's on Friday night, which was a lot of fun. A lot of the first years didn't show up despite saying they would (namely Michelle, Sue Ann, and Swapnil), but there were still enough people there. Bob Harper (my type systems professor) was actually there, which was really funny. I'm still not used to interacting socially with professors, so it seems weird to be at a party with one. But he's a cool guy, and it was nice to do something social with CS people.
