Summary: John reflects on his relationship with Rodney on this very special day.
I do
John doesn't quite know what to think. The word "happiness" flutters through his mind, but he cannot really grasp what is going to happen in a few moments.
He has to think of the day he met Rodney, when a flash of orange opened up a whole new universe to John. They've come a long way since then. They became colleagues and friends. And for a long time that was all. A really long time. If John were to measure it, the time they were friends is much longer than the time they spent together as more than friends.
But still it feels as if they'd been a couple forever, as if their friendship had just been a short prelude to the more complete relationship that they have now. They're still friends, of course. They drink beer together, watch terrible, cool movies together, but now it's natural to put his arm around Rodney, or lay his head in his lap when they're alone.
Maybe it's so hard to comprehend this day because it won't really change anything in terms of their everyday lives. But John still knows that it matters. It matters because of the mistake he made with Nancy. It matters because the fact alone that they are allowed to do this is so new. But most of all it matters because it takes their relationship from something that is to something they want to be in the future. It's a public announcement, it's a promise.
It's nothing that they haven't felt before, but then the same could be said of the first time they admitted how they felt. They'd been in love before that day, but still it changed everything.
John isn't sure how he'll feel about this change once it's happened and once it's sunken in. But he's looking forward to finding out as he prepares to say, "I do."
