What is romance?
For me, and I think maybe for many McShep fans, romance has got to be realistic, and its characters have got to be at least a little like us. They can be heroes, but it's more fun if they're geeky too, maybe a little socially inept, cranky every now and then, uncertain of themselves. It's an added bonus if their mating song sounds more like the Barenaked Ladies than Andrew Lloyd Webber.
John and Rodney aren't the pair who are drawn together by Destiny and separated by Cruel Fate, they're the couple that falls in love at the Star Trek convention and gets married in full Starfleet regalia. Their courship rituals include shared grins at the sheer coolness of it all, shooting (in the leg), pop culture in-jokes, saving one another's lives on a regular basis, and snarking with such naked affection their friends wonder why they don't just get a room already.
There's a pure, goofy joy to John and Rodney I've never encountered with any other pairing, and my desire to see them happy and in love knows no bounds. If you're with me on that, then you belong on Team Romance!
