The battery life is surprisingly good, considering... but it's got problems. Most times, when I try to boot it, the screen comes up pure white, and stays white. Since I can glark from LED-watching when it's fully booted and thus shut it down cleanly from there blind, it's not a huge issue, but it IS an issue. The fix seems to be: let it boot, shut

Does it stop doing it if you leave the battery out when not in use, effectively doing your solution pre-emptively? (This /shouldn't/ clear the CMOS unless the internal batter(y|ies) for that have gone bad, and if that were the case, you should be getting a POST error on a ThinkPad of that age.)
