My laptop is having Issues.

The battery life is surprisingly good, considering... but it's got problems. Most times, when I try to boot it, the screen comes up pure white, and stays white. Since I can glark from LED-watching when it's fully booted and thus shut it down cleanly from there blind, it's not a huge issue, but it IS an issue. I doubt a reinstall would help.

Does it stop doing it if you leave the battery out when not in use, effectively doing your solution pre-emptively? (This /shouldn't/ clear the CMOS unless the internal batter(y|ies) for that have gone bad, and if that were the case, you should be getting a POST error on a ThinkPad of that age.)

I'll give it a go. Results in a While. The CMOS is going to be fine - the battery for it is about 6 months old, since the old one was dead. I replaced it - sort of. It was a coin cell with extra bits attached, which I recycled. There should be an entry about it somewhere...

And the answer is: not if I then try to boot on battery power. It does, however, then boot right on AC. This is f'in' WEIRD.
