Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Go see this movie. You owe it to yourself.
Ron Perlman has a job for life and let's hope there's a couple more movies in the franchise because del Toro is hella director and currently made of awesome. In fact, expect "Guillermo del Toro is my master now" to appear on T-shirts. Selma Blair was pretty and pained in equal turns and made it effortless. Luke Goss plays a mean villain and if there's any justice would do well in the next Batman movie.
Abe was awesome - you know they're making up for the first movie (Jon Favreau please note, do this for Rhodey in Iron Man II and you'll have the fans eating out your hand) as he gets some cracking lines. Krauss was a comedy goldmine and the locker room sequence is just delicious slapstick. Thank you Seth McFarlane for your comedy Teutonic bombast and Mr. Perlman for your WWII Naziphobia. Cool stuff.
Jeffrey Tambour however was the usual uptight Manning. I don't know if he's a really recurring character but at some point either he breaks or it's just going to become completely ineffectual. Nice to see him stumbling trying to keep up with their weirdness and just failing to get it especially with the elemental fight and the portal to Bethmora.
Effects were gorgeous. Fight sequences were excellent, including the inhuman fluidity of the elves (not just Luke Goss but Anna Walton as well) and the sheer strangeness of the Troll Market made my larping eyes weep blood knowing we will never get that good. The Golden Army themselves were a big screen monster - you would miss some of the lavish detail on the smaller screen I think.
And elrohana was bang on about the Barry Manilow. I'm definitely going to need a beer.
Had Dim Sum for the first time last night - I'm wondering if my taste in Asian food is shifting because I wolfed down a heaping helping of teppanyaki but completely ignored the Chinese buffet. Am finding the Flaming Dragon's habit of offering you meat snacks while you're eating dessert only mildly irritating. Meat is meat after all but sometimes not with ice-cream eh boys & girls?
