Interests

Cyberpunk - I'm an '80's child from England so growing up with 2000AD and Max Headroom was going to have an effect.
Big hair, planet going to hell, military activities, the growth of corporations rivalling global powers, this weird thing called the Internet...  it all made some kind of sense.  I discovered the concept of cyberpunk by reading Neuromancer when I was 16. It's dark, dystopian, has film noir stylings and of the genres of fiction I enjoy is one of the few which consistently surprises me.  It has compelling and discordant music.  The fashion is outrageous.  The style is polyglot and extreme and it rarely has pretensions about the human condition that sci-fi loves to foist on you.  So what's not to love?

Interfaith  - So many religions express similar sentiments.  So many people seem driven to divide along differences rather than cleave to common ground.  I've been burned in the past by this but I'm still of the view that faith is a good thing but that humanity uses it to justify it's means in ways which would horrify others.  I've done some work helping disparate views get around the table and I've let that slide with recent events.  That may have to change at some point but right now I'm putting myself together again.  When I'm strong enough, I'll brave those seas again and hopefully things may have moved on from the unpleasantness I keep seeing.

Theatre - I make a great production of rolling my eyes skywards when
absintheskiss  wants to see a show.  Don't tell her this but actually I really enjoy the theatre, it's the intermissions which hack me off but they have ice-cream during then which quells that particular bete noir just fine.  If time permitted, I suspect I would be out there a little more often than I am.  I have fond memories of watching performances, both by myself and in the company of fine people.  Consider it a guilty pleasure.

Iconography:

Saint of Killers - Glen Fabry is one of my favourite artists.  Apart from being a denizen of Brighton we both have a passing fondness for Slaine but his cover work on Preacher helped define the series.  The Saint of Killers is one of those pivotal characters who represents the irresistable force at work - I shall say no more for those who haven't read the series but he is that quintessence of cool - a cowboy capable of staring down Hell and who pursues their objectives absolutely.  I wish to God I didn't identify with him sometimes.  Yet I do and it's not a nice part but it is a necessary one.  Posts featuring SoK tend to involve me doing things well or taking care of business.

Hello Clarice Owl - Owls are cool - a stealth bomber version of an eagle who flies by night.  The whole O RLY thing makes me giggle because it gives them a comedic angle and the falconry demonstration at Tales of Robin Hood features an eagle owl which is a thing of beauty to watch up to the point where you see it take the chicken breast off the head of the audience member and you realise 'shit, this is a hardcore predator'.  Add to this the whole Hannibal Lector 'refined yes, evil? Absolutely' thing and you've got a combination.  When I saw that icon, it was 'Mine!' though I admit it tends to get used when I'm a little peeved.  As the other time it would get used concerns subjects that I would be very surprised if I talked about in this journal that's probably what you're going to find.

O RLYEH? - I'm a fan of Lovecraft-style horror but it does lend itself nicely to parody and pastiche.  Add this to the O RLY gags flying around and this was another one.  Plus it's a
cleolinda  icon and as Ms. Jones is extremely inspired, this was another 'Mine' moment.  The beauty of this is that it appeals to so many demographics which I have an interest in (humour, horror, RPGs) that I know if someone digs this that I'll have at least two things we can talk about... this one ends up on chilled out posts or posts where I'm a little sceptical about the topics discussed in them.
