So after 2 weeks of sincere practice, I have finally memorized both Japanese alphabets that I had promised to learn. I am now learning how to conjugate verbs and basic sentence patterns.
On a related note, I tried Rosetta stone software and did not think it was worth the money they charge for it.
It may still be the best way to learn a language for most people; it is just not the way I have ever learnt any language. I do not think that it has a structured approach for teaching a language to adults. For kids it is probably a good tool. It offers no translations, only pictures and you get to guess what it probably means. It however does offer some good things such as allowing you to read in Japanese or in English alphabet (thus allowing different levels of difficulty). But all in all I was very disappointed with the software. I think the book that I have, which costs $20, is a much better deal.
That is all for now. More Japanese learning tool critiques to come.
