Looking for a Good Read

While clearing out all my receipts and other random crap that seems to have accumulated in my bag, I spotted a gift token for Waterstone's book shop I've never cashed in. It's worth £10 in British money, which is roughly $15.50. Now I could just hang onto it and use it as an extra Christmas gift for someone, but I'm tempted to buy a book. Does enyone have any recommendations? If it's a book published for the US market, there is no guarantee the book shop will have it, but I can always look.

I usually end up buying sci-fi books, especially stories by Terry Pratchett, but I think I've got all the Discworld books that they stock in Waterstones. I do read all sorts of other stuff but I tend to end up borrowing them from my mum.

I'm looking for adventure, romance and humor, but nothing dark or depressing.

Things I'd prefer to avoid are similar to the things I don't enjoy in fan fiction such as sad endings, death of a character I've become attached to, the point of view character/hero is a rapist, murderer or cheating on their partner, and also anything with excessive gore. I'm not fond of stories involving incest.

Of course I could by a non fiction book, something I could make use of at work, but I find these things become out of date so quickly it's not worth the expense.
