update, including Endeavour and Elementary

Half-full glass: have reorganised (again?!) my books and papers, and now I can find things almost straight away. Also, have snagged one of the last tickets to a Joan Baez concert in August. And my son is alive and well in Poland, with his Polish-Australian gf. And gym is going passably well. And I have borrowed Tony Judt's Memory Chalet.

Half-empty glass: my emotional life is flattish. Not lonely, just sort of empty of Real Meaning. Italians would say come un fucile sparato, "like a gun that has been discharged". Wanted: something or someone to commit emotionally to, as well as son, friends and trade union.

Endeavour: watched the pilot a couple of days ago. The moment at the end when young Morse, driving his Inspector's Jag, is asked how he sees himself in twenty years' time, glances into the rear-view mirror and sees John Thaw's face - a very obvious emotional manipulation, but I fell for it nonetheless, and my eyes misted. I feel motherly towards young Morse, gangling, occasionally uncertain of things, always falling for the wrong women, but intellectually confident, sharp, fond of music and puzzles. Zero slash goggles, but I will keep watching it.

Elementary: I happily lust after Lucy Liu, beautiful, wry, a terrific combination of intelligence, professional confidence and personal vulnerability. She's wonderful when she laughs, her whole body lights up. And I, with a small minority of like-minded perverts fans, enjoy the frissons between Holmes and Gregson, and am happy that a few people are giving these frissons fictional shapes.
