Can someone please tell me why all of a sudden my thermostat has been behaving strangely?
One day during this week, despite not having touched the thermostat since October when I first turned on the heat, the settings got all screwy. It thought it was 6 AM at 5PM. It would blast the heat until it was (according to the temp reading) 2 degrees higher than I'd set it for, then shut off until the temp reading was 6 degrees colder than I set it for. Then it would blast again. I re-did the settings, and according to the program readout, it's all fine. I turned it on and off, I adjusted the fan (auto or on?) and it's stillbehaving that way. And then again this morning, all of a sudden it had LOST my Saturday and Sunday program and seemed to think I wanted it to be freezing in here. WTF? So I re-did the program AGAIN, but it's still blasting for a while then shutting off for HOURS. When it blasts heat, I can't get it to stop. When it's off, I can't get it on. Right now it seems to think it's 69 degrees in here (which is what I have it programmed to) but I assure you, it is NOT that warm. It feels more like 62 degrees. How the hell can my programmable thermostat suddenly have a mind of its own and disregard all the programmed info? WTF? And I guarantee you, this is not doing my utility bill any good. The thermostat is only 3 years old, so there's no way it's breaking down. I am breaking down, but geeeeez!
I give up. I'm gonna settle down and watch a season's worth of Merlin to see if I want to take it up this season. And later there's football! My team's not in, but there should still be good games this weekend. Well - 3 of the 4 games will be good.
EDIT for clarification: My landlord can't/won't look at the progammable thermostat. I bought it and installed it myself a few years ago, because he refused to replace the ancient, inaccurate and energy sucking dial style thermostat that was here when I moved in (I don't have central air/heat). I put up with that one for 4 years, including the year he was ripping me off on my utility bill on top of the bad thermostat. As he pointed out to me (and, in this case, he's right) since I have heat, he's not obligated to change the thermostat. Since he's not paying the utility bill, not particularly environmentally conscious, he's also not motivated to upgrade it. All he's obligated to do is make sure the furnace and hot water heater work. So the thermostat problem is some gremlin in the unit itself, and thus, my responsibility. ARGH. But again, I remind myself that I am grateful to have heat. I just have to wear more clothes, which is annoying - but do-able, once I get my laundry done! lol!
