legendland Nicci sighed as she stood out on the terrace. D’Hara seemed peaceful during this warm summer night. As she gazed over the Azerith Plains, her eyes looked out into the far distance.
She missed him.
The Seeker had gone to Aydindril in order to be with his wife. He‘d left just as winter had begun to set in. After defeating the Keeper and restoring the veil, Richard had claimed his birthright. Darken Rahl hadn’t been much of a match, as the Seeker had rescued Nicci long before Rahl could steal her magic. It was unexpected, and to this day, Richard would not tell her who tipped him off about Darken Rahl and herself.
Needless to say, Richard and Nicci had formed a tight bond. A bond of close friendship. She’d given him back his magic, and thus became his teacher once more. She spent every single day with him, just about. For once in her entire life, Nicci felt proud; proud of herself. Richard had told her that she could do good, that she was capable of being something more. Nicci would never forget the first time he gave her praise.
Oh, how she lived for the times he would be with her. Even if they were seeing to countless complaints and restoring D’Hara to its former glory. Even if they were making amends for every wrong thing Darken Rahl had done to the people. The tedious task was fine by her, as long as she could remain with him.
But, for the past three years, every winter until the beginning of summer, Richard had gone to visit the Confessor.
With Kahlan having her own duties as Mother Confessor in Aydindril, Richard often left things to Nicci in D’Hara when he visited Kahlan. They were supposed to be uniting their lands, but the process of doing so was long and taxing. It was unknown how much longer it would take, not that Nicci ever complained.
Noting the position of the moon in the sky, Nicci’s lips curled into a smile and she moved back into the large room. While Richard was away, she stayed in his room. She felt most comfortable there, as his lingering scent allowed her to sleep peacefully. Moving across the room, she took a journal out from the desk drawer and grabbed a quill. Retreating to the bed, the Sorceress folded a leg beneath her as she sat, eager to find if Richard were headed back or not. She hadn’t heard from him in days, and they had been keeping in touch through journey book.
Flipping the book open, Nicci caught her breath when she found the words written so beautifully on the page.
‘Almost home. I expect to be back no later than tomorrow night.’
She’d recognize that hand writing anywhere, it was Richard’s. Her spirits soared, he was already returning? She felt giddy over the fact that she hadn’t sensed him coming. He must’ve cloaked his Han, like she’d been teaching him how to do before he had left. Wondering when the message had been sent, Nicci quickly called upon her Han to split open the tip of her finger. With fresh blood that oozed to the surface, she dabbed the quill in it and replied with haste.
‘That is good news. I got worried when there was no word.’
No sooner than she had sat back did words begin to pop up on the page, making her heart flutter.
‘General Meiffert accidentally left the journey book in a small mining town. We had to back track in order to get it back. I’m sorry to worry you. How are things in D’Hara?’
Nicci soon lost track of time. Richard spoke of his time in Aydindril, which the Sorceress did not mind. She enjoyed it when he spoke to her, it made her feel less lonely. He also spoke of other things, things that he wished for them to do once he returned. It appeared that he had a vacation of sorts planned, to which she found herself to be more than excited for. Sleep had come before the conversation even came to an end, with the quill loosely clutched in her fingers, and the book laying in her lap.
Richard returned around midday the next day. And Nicci stood waiting for him at the Palace entrance. The smile she wore was genuine, one that Richard never passed up to return one of his own. Nicci flushed when he approached, his handsome face and piercing brown eyes making her knees weak.
“Welcome home, Richard.”
