So myself and a few of the guys I shoot with were thinking about starting an IDPA club at my local gun club that I am a member of. It's all part of pushing our parent club to give us the OK and funds to build 5 more small pistol bays. Our present club has two larger (~25x35yard) pistol bays and running a four stage match in that venue is slow when you have 40 or 50 shooters.
As a result of that discussion I have be sort of tasked with researching IDPA along with another guy that helps run our USPSA matches. When this idea first came up I was pretty interested. I have never had a chance to shoot an IDPA match but have hear about and read about matches and in general IDPA sounded like a good sport to use my CCW rig in.
As part of my research I have now read the IDPA rule book cover to cover and I am presently far less excited about trying to start up and IDPA club. I know that IDPA was a spin off IPSC/USPSA. I also understand that the IDPA wanted to be self-defense orientated and less pure competition and equipment race oriented that USPSA has become. This has a certain appeal to me along with the idea of using my CCW gear to shoot compete with.
That said they needs to remove the the thinly veiled angst for USPSA/IPSC from the rule book. The book is poorly organized if one wants to use it as a reference rule book. It also serves as a poor guide line for either a competitor or match director with how hard it is to distinguish the rules and guide lines from all the preaching and attack comments. Anyone else out there have any first hand experience with IDPA that would mind commenting? The idea of trying to run a match based on this rule set is not sitting well with me.
