In spite of that really flimsy icon you pulled in Round 09, I think you've been steadily improving - not only in this challenge's Junior League, but also from the past challenge (when you participated as Barry the Chopper). Looking at the last icon showcase and comparing - you've come quite a ways. Two of my favorite icons from you this time would have to be the Heine icon in Round 08, and the Rowen icon in the Final Round. The Heine icon had a fantastic crop, and the idea behind it was pretty good - it is in my opinion easily the best icon in the table, for its originality and uniqueness. As for the Rowen icon - the coloring in it is fantastic. Your coloring is easily what's improved the most since you started, and it doesn't help that I have a weakness for warm, dusky colors. The typography, while "trendy", compliments the feel of the icon very nicely.
If you compare your 3 final round icons to your veeeeery first icons way back as Barry the Chopper - the difference is QUITE obious. Everything's improved - composition, typography, cropping, coloring. I think out of all the JLers that made it this far you have the most impressive manga coloring and the best typography - I like how each icon is very diverse from the other and how you don't just stick to whatever composition you're comfortable with.
As for your 3 final round icons themselves - they're all good with very minor flaws, I think. In the first icon, the crop is good, but it leaves little space for the text - nudging the image a little to the left would have made the text feel less cramped, I think. I love the colors, though - sunny and fresh and fitting of the image. The second has, as I said already, gorgeous colors and great typography, but the crop, again, could be improved a little bit - maybe shift the whole composition a little to the left, leave more space for the texture - alternatively, have a further away crop. Also, the sky and lighting are both a little inconsistent - it should get lighter as it gets closer to the bottom, since the sun is setting and light comes from below - but in your icon it seems to come from the northwest, and if the sun was that high the sky wouldn't quite be that red yet. As for the third, its composition is pretty good, but I think the monochrome lacks a little bit of contrast - especially between the character and the monochromatic part of the background. In spite of that, they're all very good icons.
It was a pleasure to have you in the Junior League,
co_raptor, and I hope the experience was at least worth something!

You seemed to start this challenge with only very vague notions of making graphics - and I think the improvement is quite plain to see when comparing your final three icons with your first two. Overall, I think your strongest point is cropping - most of your icons here (with the exception of maybe the monochrome one in the preliminaries and the free choice one in the final round) have very good placement.
I think you're improving, steadily, but I won't lie - there's still lots more room for improvement. I think my favorite icon from you is the Mokona one - the symmetry is very fitting (I disagree with what many other commenters said), and the simplicity of the coloring fits Mokona. The Round 08 one is also quite creative, and I like the cropping very much. Overall, though, your icons feel very simple still - try playing with color layers, soft light, brightness, contrast. Spice up your coloring a little more. I'm not sure which graphic program you use for making these - but if you don't use Photoshop (or PaintShopPro), you should probably consider switching. Be mindful of typography - the fonts you use seem either too primitive or too curly most of the time - try a website like
dafont, get some new serif and sans-serif fonts to play with. Try following icon tutorials, or do some exploring on your own to find settings and tools you're comfortable with!
As for your 3 final round icons - the Mokona one, as I said, is my favorite from you this challenge. It is very simple, and the coloring could use a little pizazz - as it is it feels very much like a colored base. Try duplicating the final product, blurring that layer, setting it to soft light - it's a simple step, but it can add a lot to coloring. The Inuyasha one, as others have pointed out, has the problem of the RL background not blending in very well - you can try to merge in a manga background next time instead, or use a texture. The cutout is pretty nice, though, and the crop is spot-on, leaves just the right amount of negative space. I think the third could've benefitted from a different crop - either further left or further right, or more zoomed-in, perhaps. The colors are also all very close to one another, a bit of difference - even if just different hues of the same color - would've made this icon pop a lot more. In your submission you said you were trying to work on typography - and it IS easily the icon with the best typography that you submitted, but it still needs a little work! It feels a tad fuzzy and doesn't blend in too well, but it's definitely better than the typography in your Round 09 one, for instance. :3

It's interesting to look at your table, because although the preliminary icons and the Squire icon in round 01 were the only icons with any real restrictions toward the use of texture and effects, they don't feel that much different from your other icons - it's obvious by looking at it that you like your icons simple and have little patience for frilly typography or textures.
I think your cropping and your simplest icons are your strongest points - both of your icons for the preliminaries are beautiful, with beautiful crops and beautiful colors and contrast, and knowing the restrictions for that round, I know there's nothing particularly fancy done to them. DNAngel manga does have the advantage of having beautiful colors by default, but then again, image choice is a very important part of making graphics, and I think for most of your icons the image choice was spot on. Your manga coloring has been steadily improving, too - the Eve icon for the final round has very nice solid colors, nicely contrasted and with good shading. I APPROVE.
As many others said about your tricolor final round icon, the choice of background texture was a little unfortunate - though I don't know whether that was because of a lack of better-fitting textures or poor choosing skills or no patience or... something. The texture as is competes a lot with the foreground and throws the icon off-focus - what you managed with your inverted crop icon (use a fancy background to take away the focus from the plain foreground) you didn't manage here. A simpler texture or even a cutout would have helped a lot, I think. The second icon has no apparent flaws, but it feels a tad incomplete - maybe it's the fact that the colors are TOO solid and in spite of being shaded, due to there only being one color, end up feeling a little flat. I think adding a black-white gradient on soft light would've helped give this icon a ton of depth. Lastly, the Basil icon has a great crop, good colors, good balance - the background seems sliiightly ill-fitting here; I'm not sure whether that was in the original image or not because my memory fails me and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think a warmer color could've worked better.
THERE ARE YOUR CRITS, MISS
technological, AND WE'RE LEAVING HERE TONIGHT~ ...oh and also I hope the experience was enjoyable and you learned something and yeah.

I think you were the person with the most favorites overall in the Junior League this challenge, and looking at your icons, I think I can see why. They're not fancy, not trendy, but they're very well executed. I like that they're predominantly hush icons - and looking at your Round 02 icon, I can tell typography is your weakest point. That's fine, though, text is a problem for the majority of iconmakers - your stronger points are coloring and cropping, and those are excellent in the majority of your icons.
I think my personal favorite is your second icon for the preliminaries, and your Romeo icon for round 04. The Gokudera icon just grabs my eye - it was a very good decision to leave only his jacket supersaturated, it makes for an awesome effect, and the crop helps keep focus. The Romeo icon is just overall very nice - the coloring is great, the crop is balanced, the background fills the negative space perfectly - it's a great, great icon, and if you don't mind it, I'm totally using it in my personal journal! The blues are very gorgeous.
As for your final round icons - my favorite is the second. The coloring in it is a very obvious improvement from your Tsuna icon, and it's also very fitting - the black bar helps balance the composition, as do the light textures. I can't find any fault with it, really! The first icon is nice, too, but I think it has a tad too much negative space, and the tinytext alone doesn't fill it up enough. Maybe increasing contrast on the character would help this icon pop some more, too. I do like the desaturation and the choice of colors to keep, it adds style to the icon. Your third icon is great - not many people venture away from iconing humans, and iconing a giant robot isn't something you see every day! The dark colors are fitting here, though I think the light textures are a little excessive (if they even are light textures, if not ignore me!) and distracting. I can understand why not many people could understand what was going on, though - the non-standard "character" in the icon could cause a lot of confusion if one is unfamiliar with the series, but I don't think that's too much of a problem. A lot of people tend to pick on incomprehensibility in icons, but well, if abstract art exists and is recognized as art, I don't think it matters if one can understand what's going on or not as long as it is aesthetically pleasing. :3

Looking at all your icons together, save perhaps the Round 04 icon, the one thing they all have in common is that they scream concept. Your icons are different from what you see everyday - not in execution, because you still have lots of improvement ahead of you, in my opinion - but the idea behind them. You always pick fitting images, and choose fitting crops, and the message in your icons is often very clear - they may not be trendy or the best icons ever, but they are definitely the most original out of all the icons in this showcase.
I think one of my favorites is your second icon from the final round - it has a flair in the execution (the use of a texture-like frame) that the others don't, and the muted pastel colors are also very fitting. In my opinion it's the icon with the most unity, and I was happy to see that it was one of your final round icons! it's a sign of improvement in technique, in my opinion, which is all that your icons really lack. :3 I also especially liked the icon from Round 07 - it is very simple, but very effective in its simplicity. The flat colors fit, and I like that you left the strip that says "comics" there (if it was even a part of the original image), because it enhances the flatness of the icon more, and in this case - the flatness is its greatest asset.
The one thing your three final round icons have in comon and that you should probably pay mind to is that they're all images from fairly obscure manga - and as such whoever scanned them probably didn't bother to keep the image quality good. Good source image quality is essential for making any kind of graphics, from icons to layouts to pixel cards to wallpapers. If the source is grainy with scanlines, it becomes very difficult to fix it - and your first icon still has lots of grain and scanlines visible as a result, making the quality seem poor. I've already critted your second icon above, and I like it - I do think the texture to the right feels a little too overpowering, maybe, though I'm not sure how to fix that. Lastly, your third icon is very simple with an effective crop - as others pointed out, it feels a little blurry, and I think the background throws it off-focus since the character's colors are very muted. I'd suggest either making the character completely monochrome, or lowering contrast in the background and increasing it in the foreground.
Thanks for participating,
ririkit! I hope you had a good one. ♥
