House on the Rock

This past weekend was nice. We went to The House on the Rock in Spring Green on Saturday. I’m not even really sure how to describe this place.. It was once just a big rock in the middle of a beautiful part of our state. Right down the road from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. He first built a unique house upon the rock and later began expanding his property/buildings and purchased a HUGE eclectic collection of items.

There are a ton of really cool musical contraptions/setups that he built. There are whole rooms filled with different kinds of instruments that all play on their own! Little orchestras throughout. As well as other neat machines that do things. There is a circus area, streets of yesterday filled with little shops, doll house collection, a doll carousal, world’s largest and most expensive merry go round, knights and armor, a huge whale and maritime museum items, aviation area, old cars and carriages, an infinity room, Japanese garden, and so many other things that are indescribable! We spent quite a few hours touring all three sections of the attraction. I believe it even has its own entry in Atlas Obscura.

This place is pretty famous in WI and even worldwide but I had never been there before. Jan grew up nearby so he had gone there a lot and had no interest in returning but he finally decided it might be a good time to take the boys. Our family of four cost almost $100, so we probably won’t do it again anytime soon, but it was a really fun experience!
